TEST REPORTS
INTRODUCTION
Road markings are used to provide visual and audible warnings, prohibition,
segregation and delineation information to the motorist, in order to improve
traffic safety and traffic movement.
Materials are applied to the surface of the road markings in order to
enhance performance characteristics, such as visibility and skid resistance.
By day, visibility is achieved by ensuring that the markings have sufficient
luminance, which provides a contrast with the road surface. By night, this is
achieved by the retroreflectivity of glass beads on or in the marking material.
Pedestrian areas, cycle lanes, larger area road markings and those in critical
locations may need a degree of skid resistance. Applying anti-skid materials
on or in the marking, results in a roughened surface, which increases the skid
resistance. Wherever possible the skid resistance of the line should not be
less than the road surface.
Keeping up to our brand promise, Happilac Paints takes yet another step
towards innovation by introducing the European Transport Route safety
Products and Equipment in Pakistan. With state of the art machinery, superior
road marking paints and services, we strive to contribute towards better,
safer and improved living conditions for the Nation.
With over 35 years of experience, we offer an extensive range of road marking
products covering hot applied thermoplastic, waterborne and solvent based
paint. Application methods for our road markings include screed, spray and
extrusion by hand and machine.

THERMOPLASTIC
ROAD MARKING
PAINT
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Happilac Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint is hot applied road marking paint which
consists of light colored aggregates, pigments, extenders, and glass beads bound together
with a thermoplastic resin, plasticized as necessary. When in molten state after heating, it is
applied hot to road surfaces, using screed, extrusion or spray application.
FEATURES:
• Excellent adhesion and durability
• Outstanding retention of Glass Beads
• Fast drying
• High heat stability
• Excellent wear properties
RECOMMENDED:
Happilac Thermoplastic Road Marking Paint is suitable for asphalt, concrete roads,
runways, speed humps and parking lots.
LIMITATIONS:
• Drying time may vary depending on weather and drying conditions.
• Appropriate preparation of substrate is required for stronger adhesion.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
Composition:
Binder: 20 ± 2 % by mass
Glass Beads: 20% by mass minimum
Aggregate: 80±2% by mass (Pigment, Extenders, Ballotini)
Performance Data:
Softening Point >650c
Flash Point Should Exeed 2350c
Density (g/cc) 2.0 ± 0.1
Drying Time Surface Dry: 5 Minutes
Hard Dry: 30 Minutes
Color Yellow & White
SURFACE PREPARATION:
The road surface must be dry and free from dust, dirt, grease, salt and any other contaminate.
The temperature of the road surface must be below 60oC and above 5oC. Road Marking
applied to new or abnormally hot bituminous surfaces can become discolored or obliterated by
the transfer of bituminous by vehicle tires. Material must be applied at least 7 days after newly
applied asphalt surface and may vary depending on bitumen contents in asphalt and weather
conditions.
The material can be laid over existing thermoplastic marking, if the original markings are sound.
If not, then the old thermoplastic must be removed before applying new material.
On badly worn bitumen or concrete, road surface must be treated with primer or other
approved material prior to application of thermoplastic material.
MATERIAL APPLICATION:
Material has to be placed into a pre-heater fitted with mechanical stirrer and the
thermometer. When the material has been heated to its application temperature, around
200±20oC, carefully transfer to the application equipment and proceed with use,
maximum safe heating temperature of 220oC should not be exceeded. Material may be
applied by screed, extrusion and spray method using either machine or hand screed
equipment to the following thickness.
Screed Lines: 1.5-3.0 mm
Sprayed lines(other than yellow): ≥1.5mm
Sprayed yellow edge lines: ≥ 0.8mm
Extruded lines: 1.5-3.5mm
Coverage: 3-4 kg/m2 @ 1.5mm thickness
Drop on glass beads, confirming to BS 6088 Class B, may be applied to improve road
marking visibility at a rate of 450±50 g/m2. Material may be reheated gradually to avoid
scorching, and used after solidifying providing the total time in molten state has not
exceeded 6 hours.
Newly applied road marking must be coned, or blocked by any other means of traffic
safety, and should not be subject to any traffic for minimum of 12 hours to achieve the
best result.
AFTER CARE:
Under normal traffic conditions with temperature within normal range and periodic rainfall,
thermoplastic road marking material is self cleaned and requires no ongoing
maintenance.
HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTES:
• When applying Paint, take appropriate eye wear protection.
• In case of eye contact with product, rinse with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes.
• Don’t breathe spray mist or dust.
• Ensure proper road temperature when applying paint.
• If swallowed, it may cause serious damage.
• Place out of reach of the children.
• Pregnant women are advised to avoid breathing of paint mist or spray.
• In case of any emergency, undergo medical supervision as soon as possible.
CAUTION:
Scrapping/sanding off previously painted surfaces may release lead dust or fumes. Lead
is highly toxic; take protective measures thoroughly when rubbing off the old surfaces.
The information provided in this data sheet is accurate and authentic to the best of our
knowledge and based on standard tests. However, results may vary due to possible
variations in field conditions and application procedures.
