LESSON
DEVELOPMENT OF MEASUREMENT
1

Since early civilization, measurement has been part of

the life of people in the world. From the early primitive
instruments that people used, the instruments have become
more complex, more accurate, and some presently more highly
technological.

As humans acquired more material possessions, they

felt a need for expression of numbers and quantityor a system
of measurement. This need led to the use of phrases for
comparing, such as “heavier than,” “greater than,” “taller than,”
“longer than,” and so forth. Later, people found the need to use
single unit quantities to be able to measure and record measurements.

In the early times, parts of the human body were used as units of measurements,
such as hand, the foot, the span, and the cubit.

The Romans introduced the cubit, which is approximately 26.6 inches. In

England, King Henry I decreed that the yard, which is now set as 36 inches long, was
the distance from the tip of the king’s nose to the end of the thumb of an outstretched
arm. The mile, which has become standardized as 5 280 feet, evolved from the Roman
mile, which was equivalent to 2 000 paces. Other standardized units, such as inch, rod,
and acre, came into the English system of measurement, too.

At the end of the 18th century, and with the advance of scienceand technology, a
more convenient system of measurement was developed-the Metric System. Scientist
from many countries were convened by the French Academy of Science to establish
international standards of measures.

Two systems of measurement have evolved: the English System and the Metric
system, which is based on the decimal system, uses the place value concept.

A Learning Module in Mathematics 7| 8

Historical Note

In ancient times, a
cubit is the length of a
pharaoh’s arm. The
Egyptians made extremely
accurate measurements in
building the Great Pyramid
at Giza using the cubit. In
the Bible, the measures of
Noah’s Ark were likewise
given in cubits.

A Learning Module in Mathematics 7| 9

LESSON THE STANDARD SYSTEMS OF MEASURE
2

Two standard systems of measurement were developed: the U.S. customary or

the “English” system and the metric system. The United States uses the customary
system and some metric, while the rest of the world uses the metric system exclusively.

The English System

The English system of measurement is based on the British Imperial System. Its
units evolved from nonstandard units of measure in medieval times like the foot, yard
and inch.

Since the English system does not use a baseunit and prefixes, it requires a lot
of memorization and is not convenient to use. Each unit has a separate name. For
instance, 1 foot = 12 inches and 1 yard = 3 feet. In order to convert one unit to another,
you need to know the conversion factor or the number of units that another unit is equal
to.

The Metric System

The widely used standard system of measurement is the metric system. It is

based on decimals just like our numeration and monetary systems. Since its
introduction in 1970 by a Frenchman named Gabriel Mouton, the metric system has
proven to be convenient and ideal to use. Since the system is based on multiples of 10,
counting and performing mathematical operations are easier. It is no surprise then that
the metric system is used in most countries all over the world, including the Philippines.

LESSON PERIMETER
4

“Peri” means around and “metre” means measure; hence perimeter literally
means the measure around.

Perimeter (as a measure) is the sum of the measures of the sides of a polygon.
The formula for finding the perimeter of plane figures can be determined.

A. Perimeter of a Triangle

A triangular piece of paper measures 4 cm, 5 cm and 6 cm. What is the

perimeter in centimeters of the piece of paper?

Perimeter is the sum of the measures of the

lengths of the 3 sides.

a = 4 cm c = 6 cm
P=a+b+c

P = a + b+ c
b = 5cm
=4+5+6

= 15 cm

A Learning Module in Mathematics 7| 18

B. Perimeter of a Rectangle

A rectangle table cloth has a width of 2.5 m and a length of 4 m. How many
meters of lace trimmings should be bought to make its borders?

The figure shows that the perimeter of a

rectangle can be determined by adding twice
its length and twice its width.
2.5 m
P = 2l + 2w

4m

Thus, P = 2 (4) + 2 (2.5)

=8+5

= 13 m, needed for the lace trimmings

C. Perimeter of a Square

A decorative mat is a square. One side is 50 cm. How long an edging is needed
to put borders on it?

The figure shows that a square has four equal

sides. Its perimeters can be found simply by
multiplying one side by four.

50 cm
P = 4s

P = 4 (50)

= 200 cm

Notice that for any type of polygon, finding the perimeter is simply
measuring the distance around it or using the more convenient
formula.

LESSON
MEASURES OF WEIGHT
6

In common language, mass and weight are used interchangeably although

weight is the more popular term. Oftentimes in daily life, it is the mass of the given
object which is called its weight. However, in the scientific community, mass and weight
are two different measurements. Mass refers to the amount of matter an object has
while weight is the gravitational force acting on an object.

Weight is often used in daily life, from commerce to food production. The base SI
unit for weight is the kilogram (kg) which is almost exactly equal to the mass of one liter
of water. For the English System of Measurement, the base unit for weight is the pound
(lb). Since both these units are used in Philippine society, knowing how to convert from
pound to kilogram or vice versa is important. Some of the more common Metric units
are the gram (g) and the milligram (mg) while another commonly used English unit for
weight is ounces (oz).

MEASURES OF TEMPERATURE
8

The hotness or coldness of the day is felt on the skin. The instrument used for
measuring temperature is the thermometer.

The melting point of a substance is the temperatureat which it changes from

solid to liquid. The melting point of pure ice is 0 ○C or 32 ○F.

The boiling point of a substance of a substance is the temperature at which it

changes from liquid to gas. The boiling point of water is 100 ○C or 212 ○F.

The freezing point of a substance is the temperature at which it changes from

liquid to solid. The freezing point of water is 0 degree C or 32 degrees F.

a. The formula of converting Fahrenheit to Celsius is as follows:

𝟓
C = x (○F - 32○)
𝟗

where C is the Celsius reading and F is the Fahrenheit reading.

b. To convert a Celsius scale reading to Fahrenheit, use the formula below.

𝟗
F= x (○C + 32○)

LESSON
MEASURES OF TIME
9

Primitive man used to tell time by the position of the sun, the stars and the
moon and the behavior of animals. They used the sundial, the water clocks and the

Ana spent 45 minutes writing her essay. How many
Example 1 seconds did she spend writing?

Solution: Refer to TABLE 16, we find that to get

seconds we will multiply 60 to minutes?

45 min x 60 = 2, 700 sec.

Therefore, Ana spent 2, 700 sec. writing her essay.

Example 2 Noel and Lito worked for a math project. Noel

said he spend one hour and ten minutes working.
Lito continued the work for 95 minutes. What was
the total time spent in finishing the project?

Solution: Refer to TABLE 16 and convert the 95

minutes into hours. Hence, 95 min. equal 1 hr and
35 min. Add the two values of time.

1 hr 10 min

+ 1 hr 35 min

2 hrs 45 min

Therefore, Noel and Lito spent 2 hrs and 45 min to

finish their math project.

LESSON
MEASURES OF ANGLES
10

An angle is formed by the union of two rays or two line segments that have a
common endpoint called the vertex. The rays or line segment are called the sides of the
angle.

The figure on the left below shows the angle with the vertex B, whose sides
contains points A and C. It is denoted asABC, which read as “angle ABC.” An angle can
also be identified by the letter of its vertex such asB as sown at the left, or by a numeral
such as 1 shown at the right. The symbol stands for angle.

1)
B
C

Angles are measured through the use of a semicircular graduated instrument

called protractor. Degree is the unit in measuring an angle. Generally, the measure of
an angle is between 0 and 180 degrees.

A protractor has two scales; the inner scale and the outer scale. To determine
the measure of an angle when the interior of the angle opens toward the right, we use
the inner scale. To determine the measure of an angle which opens toward the left, we
use the outer scale.

A Learning Module in Mathematics 7| 40

Here are the steps to find the degree measure of ABC with the use of a protractor:

B C

1. Place the center of the protractor at the vertex (point B) of the angle.

2. Align the diameter of the protractor (marked 0 degree or 180 degrees) with BC one

side of ABC.

3. Read the degree measure of the angle whose other side BC crosses the protractor.
This reading gives the measure of the angle in degrees.

If an angle has a measure of 90 degree, it is called a ninety-degree angle or a

right angle; if it is between 0 to 90, it is called an acute angle; it its measure is greater
than 90 but less than 190, it is called an obtuse angle; and if it has a measure of 180, it
is called a 180-degree angle or a straight angle.

LESSON RATIO
11

Ratio is the comparison of two quantities of the same kind, such as two groups
of students, two kinds of vehicles, two sets of books, and so on.

What is the ratio of 20 minutes to 1 hour?

Example 1 Twenty minutes and 1 hour are quantities of the

same kind that are expressed in different units. To
compare them, change them to the same unit.
20 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 20 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 1
= 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 = 3 or 1:3
1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟

Rate and Unit Rate

Rate is a comparison of two quantities which have different units. Ratio is also
used to express rate.

A car travelled 120 kilometers in 2 hours. What is the

Example 2 travelling rate or speed of the car?

Solution:
120 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 60 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠
= = 60 kilometers per hour
2 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟

Ratio with Three or More Terms

A piece of land 852 square meters in area, is to be

divided into smaller lots so that the areas are in the
Example 3
ratio 1:2:3. What are the areas of the lots?

The whole piece of land is said to be divided into 3

parts. Represent the first as a =1, the second as b =
2, and the third as c = 3; the three quantities a, b, and
c are so related that a:b = 1:2; b:c = 2:3; a:c = 1:3.

Therefore, (n x 1) + (n x 2) + (n x 3) = 450 m2

n + 2n + 3n = 450 m2

6n = 450 m2
450 m2
n= 6

n = 75 m2

To find the area of each lot –

n x 1 = 75 m2 x 1 = 75 m2

n x 2 = 75 m2 x 2 = 150 m2

n x 3 = 75 m2 x 3 = 225 m2

Check. Add the three areas.

(75 + 150 + 225) m2 = 450 m2

450m2 = 450 m2

Wrap up
Measurement is a process of comparing an unknown quantity to a standard known
quantity.
Meaningful measurement and estimation of measurements requires familiarity with unit
of measure being used.
The non-standard units of measures used by the early civilizations include body parts
and common objects in the surrounding.
English System: it evolved from the non-standard units of measure, requires
memorization of conversion factors and is inconvenient to use.
Metric System; it is based on the decimal system and allows easy conversion from one
unit to another.
Length is the measurement of distance from one end to another.
Area refers to the number of square units of a flat
surface.
The perimeter of a shape is the sum of the
given sides.
Volume is the amount of space occupied by a
three-dimensional object as measured in cubic
units.
An angle is the union of two rays with a common
endpoint called the vertex.
Weight is computed in terms of body mass in relation to the Earth’s
gravitational pull.
Temperature is a measure of the degree of hotness and coldness of
an object.
Time is the period or duration of an occurrence of an action as
measured in second, minute, hours, etc.
Ratio is the comparison of two quantities of the same kind.
