DISCUSSION
LESSON 1: Kinds of Adjectives
Can you still recall the meaning of adjectives?

An adjective is a word used to describe or modify a noun or pronoun. Adjectives can be

classified as descriptive or limiting.

Descriptive Adjectives
A descriptive adjective answers the question “What kind?”

Examples:
• His hardworking father worked two jobs. (What kind of father?)

• The beautiful maiden was called on stage. (What kind of maiden?)

Some descriptive adjectives may be proper adjectives. A proper adjective is an adjective
formed from a proper noun. It is always capitalized.

3|Page
Example:
• He has Filipino values. (What kind of values?)

Limiting Adjectives
A limiting adjective answers the following questions:
• “Which one?”
• “Whose?”
• “How many?”
• “How much?”
• “What position in a series?”

Limiting adjectives can be articles, numerals, or pronominals.

• Articles – They are used before a noun and can be classified as definite or indefinite.
▪ Definite – There is only one definite article: the. It specifies a particular noun.
Example: The car of Lolo Endong (specific, identifiable car: the car of Lolo
Endeng)

▪ Indefinite – There are two indefinite articles: a and an. Both do not refer to a
specific noun.
Example: An island in the southeast (refers to any island)
A hospital in Lingayen (refers to any hospital)

• Numerals – They suggest quantity, sequence, and figures. A numeral may be a

cardinal or ordinal.

▪ Cardinal – This refers to the Hindu-Arabic numerals.

Example: He gave ten pesos. (How much money?)

▪ Ordinal – This suggests a number sequence.

Example: Mario is the second child in the family. (What is the position in the
series of children?)

• Pronominals – These are the possessive forms of personal pronouns, demonstrative

pronouns, and indefinite pronouns. Pronominals are considered adjectives
because they also help modify nouns.

Examples: its lexicon your answer
our country
▪ Demonstrative adjectives point out nouns and indicate their location from the
speaker.
Examples: this month these letters
that book those students

▪ Interrogative adjectives are used in asking questions.

Examples: What activities does your school offer?
Whose poem is it?

they modify.
