ABSTRACT

Children who belong to a broken home are the ones who suffer the most. When

the parent decides to separate, the children will be affected emotionally, mentally and

socially. According to Ruksana Saikia a Research Scholar from India, children who

make problem, rivalry and discontentment in the school or other gathering place are

usually from the broken family.

To be broken in the family, there must be some crises which are arisen out of

misconception, mistreating, misunderstanding, domestic violence, dissolved marriage or

anything else that interferes with the upbringing of children that may lead to separation,

disposal of sons and daughters and leaving home.

It is an alarming issue that is present in our society today and is consider as a

serious case that needs attention and needs to take a call of action. Broken homes are

experience by some of the students not only with those in poverty line families but same

goes with to middle and higher class families.

The study focuses on the reasons behind a child’s academic performance that

belongs to a broken family and what are the changes happened to a child after the

separation. We will gather information about children affected by this issue through the

process of producing a survey questionnaire to the chosen respondents. Our purpose of

our study is to seek data and learn how broken family affects a child in terms of

educational aspect and anything else about it to gain an efficient result for

recommendation.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Family is the foundation for civilization and a sanctuary of individual. It is

where a person first learns good values and morality, where the psychological, moral,

and spiritual foundation of a child lays. It is where we start to build blocks to create our

own life, seek for meaning of our existence and perform roles as a part of something

greater than ourselves. As such, it becomes the antecedent of our identity. But for those

who had less than this ideal situation growing up, much likely to visualize family as

heartache and heavy burden.

According to Olokuntoye from Nigeria, In an ideal atmosphere for children should

happily be with their parents and children appreciated the love of their parent towards

them and one of the tasks that should be fulfilled by parents is to educate their children

because the education of children does not start from school. This is because live

schooling of students started from home. A home is the walls of the house but the

people who live on it make a home. A house only become a home when if complete. A

home also became a house when is not broken.

Tandag City, Surigao del Sur

HEMM (1970), a broken home means a heroic in which the parents separated or

divorced or are no more by either as a result of death. Children from such home lack

proper care and security. The suffering of such children could be seen in differed

dimension.

A disunited home is a place where vital parts are unfortunately missing. Where

family value is lacking and household ties are hostilely and inevitably cut. Being into a

broken family gives a lot of effects in a teenager. The emotional stress of a divorce

alone can be enough to stunt your child’s academic progress, but the lifestyle changes

and instability of a broken family can contribute to educational outcomes. Giwa (1997),

have also investigated the various factors within the students home background or

family that affect their academic performance in school, variable such as socio-

economic status, family size, birth order, parental attitude child rearing practices

parental absence or presence have been found to affect social and intellectual learning

experience of children in school.

The home has been identified as an overwhelming factor affecting students’

performance academically. It would appear, then, that broken homes may present a

very serious danger to the emotional, personality, and mental adjustment of the young

adolescent. This impinges on students’ academic achievement. Omoruyi (2014)

The aim of this paper is to throw some light about the effects of broken home to

the academic performance of a child. In this study, it would create sympathy to a child

who is a member of a broken family. Also, this would make an essential conclusion on

how this issue affects a child’s academic performance.

Theoretical Conceptual Framework

The piece of work hitched on the theories and concepts that are akin to the

study. After the classification of children who belong to broken family, the process of

distributing the research materials follows. The data will then gathered and will be used

for statistical analysis.

The study is main pointing on how broken family affects a child in terms of

academic performance. The purpose of the study is to examine the impact or the effects

of the certain phenomena as a factor of a child’s academic aspect.

Shown in the conceptual framework, the box with a green color contains the main

problem in the research. It is to determine that when it comes to academic performance

of a child, how broken family affects. The three boxes with yellow color contain the

effects of the issue to a certain child (behavioural, emotional and mental). After the data

will be gathered from the survey, the data will be interpreted that will become as the

main basis that would derived from the outcome of the study.

The last lower box contains the result of those behavioural, emotional, and

mental effects as a factor of child’s academic performance which results to conclusion

and recommendation for upcoming studies related to this piece of work.

Statement of the Problem

The primal intention of having this study is to know the consequences of broken

family to a child’s academic performance and to derive with good conclusions and

recommendation on how to amend a student’s way of dealing with school matters. It

also aims to answer the following questions.

1. What is the relevance of a family background to the child’s behavioural,

emotional and mental aspects?

2. What are the effects of broken family to a child?

3. How these effects affect a child’s academic performance?

Scope and Limitation

The study only focuses on the effects of broken homes to a child’s academic

performance. The scope of it is limited only to the students of Saint Theresa College

who are experiencing the issue of broken family. The respondents are also bounded in

number as of the survey questionnaires only have 20 copies. The survey will be

conducted in the said school and the information gathering will be done on the month of

March 2018.

Significance of the Study

A child who’s getting most of the damage emotionally needs not to be

sympathized but to be attended properly with all the might to help and understand the

behaviour they’re showing. This study would be beneficial to students who suffer from

low academic performance due to a broken family. Teachers will be more informed of

the aftermath of broken homes to a child’s learning and will show a better approach to

students who are experiencing it.

At the end of the data analysis, recommendations will be made for immediate

action so that children from such homes will be able to benefit from school learning.

the concepts, findings, and conclusions explain further the summary, observations and

recommendations stipulated in this piece of work.

According to Frazer (2001), psychological home conditions arise mainly from

illegitimacy of children, the label of adopted child, broken home, divorce and parental

deprivation. Such abnormal conditions of the home, are likely to have a detrimental

effect on school performance of the child he asserts. Schultz (2006) noted that if

adolescents from unstable homes are to be compared with those from stable homes, it

would be seen that the former have more social, academic and emotional problems.

Levin (2001), also states that parents are probably the actors with the clearest

dimensional interest in a high level of their children’s academic performance. To some

extent, there simple evidence to show that marital instability brings about stress,

tension, lack of motivation and frustration. Obviously, these manifestations act

negatively on a child’s academic performance.

Some children irrespective of home background or structure may work hard and

become successful in life. Moreover, Ayodele (2006) stated that the environment where

a child finds himself/herself goes a long way in determining his learning ability and

ultimately his academic performance in school. If home environment is not intellectually

stimulating, some students find it difficult to cope in school and may eventually dropout

of school. Ichado (1998) notes that the environment in which the students come from

can greatly influence his performance in school.

Local

People tend to misunderstand a child’s behaviour in school in an adverse way.

But not all children who came from a broken home are affected negatively. But

according to Dacey and Travers not all children from a broken family exhibits negative

effects, some of them grow strong and healthy and later they are one who supports their

family.

According to Akinboye (2004) academic performance is of two types: positive

and negative or poor performance. The factors namely habits, family background,

perseverance, attitudes, interests – all these affect academic achievement in school and

concluded that if these variables are modified and attitude changed positively, then the

level of individuals’ academic performance would improve.

Accepting the idea of having a broken family can cause some emotional

problems to children, this problem sometimes end up of having trouble in meeting their

academic and social expectations at school. According to McLanahan and Sandefur

(“Growing Up with a single Parent: What Hurts, What Helps” Harvard University Press

1994), Children who have divorced parents are approximately two times more expected

to drop out of high school than those children whose parents are intact.

Ajila and Olutola (2007), Nzewuawah (1995) are of a similar opinion that the

home environment has been recognized as having a relationship with the academic

achievement of students. Scales and Roehlkepartain (2003), are of the opinion that the

family and its structure play a great role in children’s academic performance. In most

case, family or specifically parents, serves as one of biggest influence in a child’s

academic performance.

Local

According to Carlos (1995), individuals who have experienced a family conflict

have a more difficult time catching up with their studies and their extra-curricular

Senior High School Department

activities in school rather than individuals who have a complete family or blended

families.. As stated by an unknown source, “I separate parts of my life especially when

in school; I don’t let my parents’ separation be a reason for me to destroy my life just

because they’ve destroyed theirs.”

Insights Gain

We learned that having a broken family is not easy and it can affect the academic

performance of those who are part of this line. And as we observed, mostly, they take it

as tribulation causing them to drop their interests in anything.

This dilemma may build a gap between the closeness of the parent and the child

that eventually may cause an everlasting damage to their relationship. But not all

children who came from a broken home experiences failure in their academic

performance some of them are not affected much of the situation. Like, instead of

feeling down they make it their inspiration to strive hard. We know that once a family

splits caused by a conflict, every member is affected and it is their choice on how to

react in this situation and we’ve realized that not all individuals treat this condition as the

end of their lives.
