PLANNING THE TEACHING & LEARNING PROCESS
The Teaching of Vocabulary (Suggested models)

General principles of teaching vocabulary

- When teaching a vocab item, teach its pronunciation, spelling,
denotational, connotational meaning (plump: fat, obese, depending on
context, style;
- syntactic features, how the words collocate, style, etc.
- teach vocabulary using simple structure.
- consider interference from L1 or L2. It can be positive or negative.
- pedagogical considerations for e.g. teachability, learnability or practicality;
- coverage: ‘seat’ before ‘armchair’; concrete before abstract words, etc.

Active vs passive vocabulary

- ‘passive’ vocab refers to the words that Ss understand, but do not use.
- ‘active’ vocabulary are the words that learners understand and use in
speaking or writing. The active and passive vocabulary may change with
time, i.e. what may be passive can become active in the future.

Techniques of Teaching Vocabulary

Visualisation:
- using realia, visual aids pictures, acting, etc. It is effective: time-saving
especially for beginners, but, if overused it can develop laziness, as
students may keep relying on the visual.
In context
Through situations: through Qs and As. Ss are more exposed to the FL.
They become active and can guess, but it is challenging for some Ss.
Definition
- using synonyms, antonyms or paraphrasing. This technique is effective for
it is time-saving and helps students develop their linguistic repertoire, but
sometimes can be confusing for poor Ss.
Translation
- can be used for clarifying culture specific items, but not to be advised or
encouraged very often. Not all Ss are good at L1 or L2.

Steps of a Vocabulary lesson

1) Presentation
- T creates the need to learn, then introduces it in appropriate context,
- T helps students pronounce it and write it correctly,
2) Manipulation in context
- T asks a q, provides (a) situation(s) and Ss respond using the word,
3) Exploitation/ Verification of Ss’ comprehension
- Ss give examples using the words, but T may help with situations,
4) Writing
- Ss use the words in sentences and copy some of them on the board.
