INORG LAB Reactions of Alkaline Earth Group

This document summarizes the reactions of barium (Ba2+), strontium (Sr2+), calcium (Ca2+), and magnesium (Mg2+) ions with various reagents. It shows that each cation produces distinct precipitates or colors that can be used to identify it, such as Ba2+ forming a yellow precipitate with potassium chromate. A flowchart is also provided outlining the step-by-step procedure to determine the identity of an unknown alkaline earth metal cation based on these characteristic reactions.

REACTIONS AND ANALYSIS OF THE ALKALINE EARTH GROUP (EXPT 7)

STEP 1

• Take 1 mL of the unknown solution.

• Add 6M NH4OH until alkaline.
• Add 15 drops of a mixture of (NH4)2CO3 and
95% C2H5OH (Ethanol)*
• Don’t forget to stir.

STEP 2

PRECIPITATE: BaCO3, SrCO3, CaCO3,

MgCO3.(NH4)2CO3.4H2O

*precipitate should be white*

• Discard the centrifugate.
• Dissolve the precipitate in CH3COOH dropwise
(add 3 drops of CH3COOH first, then stir. Add
more of the reagent if the precipitate is still
present.)
• Divide the solution into two test tubes.

STEP 3 STEP 4

• Add K2CrO4 • Add K2C2O4

• Result: Yellow ppt of BaCrO4 • Result: White ppt of CaC2O4
• Flame Test: should produce • Flame Test: brick red color
yellow green color which which confirms Ca2+
confirms Ba2+ • If no ppt was produced, proceed
• If no ppt was produced, proceed to Step 5
to Step 3.1

STEP 5
STEP 3.1
• Take a portion of the unknown
• Add NH4OH solution.
• Add 95% C2H5OH (Ethanol) • Add 6M NaOH until alkaline.
• Add a few drops of dye:
• Result: Yellow ppt of SrCrO4
• Flame Test: carmine red color
which confirms Sr2+ STEP 5.1 STEP 5.2
• If no ppt was produced, proceed • Add Titan Yellow • Add p-nitrobenzene
to Step 4 • Result: red gelatinous azoresorcinol
ppt of Mg(OH)2 confirms • Result: blue gelatinous
Mg2+ ppt confirms Mg2+
