I. Course Desription
This course deals with the study of language from the users’ point of view,
especially of the choices they make, the constraints they encounter in using
language in social interaction, and the effect their use of langauge on other
participants in an act of communication. The field of this study is between
semantics, socio-linguistics and extralinguistic context. In addition, this course
also examines the application of pragmatic study in english language teaching
and learning. Topics to discuss include deixis, reference and inference,
presuppositions and entailment, conversational implicature, speech act,
politeness and interaction. The assessment on students’ learning progress is
based on students’ weekly contribution to the class discussion and presentation,
individual and group assignments, the mid semester and the final tests.

IV. Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on the following criteria

It should be noted that to be able to sit in the test and to allow for the final result to
be published, students are required to meet a minimum of 80% of attendance of the
total lectures. Plagiarism is NOT TOLERATED and will result in severe penalties.
