Week Two - Research

RESEARCH

What did you learn from your This week I have:


research? - Learnt more about what my medium requires me
to produce in order to come under it.
- I now have a clear idea of what a professional
example of a sporting documentary like the one I
wish to complete looks like.
- I have gained quite a few ideas of what I wish to
include in my documentary.

How has the research for your It has made me make a lot of decisions about the
medium helped you improve your specifics within my idea. First of all, researching the
ideas? six main types of documentary and what they all entail
led me to decide what type mine is going to be. I
decided on the expository mode, this is then the genre
that my documentary fits into. Secondly, researching
the purpose of a documentary and not finding a
straight answer made me focus more on what the point
of mine is personally – rather than just to ‘inform’.
Watching some award winning documentaries has
acted as some inspiration for my own documentary. For
example, I thought the montage introduction in
‘Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)’
trailer was very effective and gave a quick overview as
to what the documentary will show you. This grabbed
my interest a lot more than a slow introduction
would’ve, this could be make or break for someone
watching my full documentary or skipping it. This
grabbed my attention more than introductions you
usually see because I saw things that I then looked
forward to throughout the trailer. I think that not only
has my research helped me improve my ideas but it
has helped me further them.

How has the research into I made sure the artists and producers that I researched
artists/producers helped you make similar documentaries to the one that I am
improve your ideas? planning on producing. This meant that I could get
direct inspiration from what they have included in their
documentaries to what I should put in mine. They are
popular creators and therefore I know that the ideas I
would be using from them are good and effective with
engaging my target audience. An example of what
inspiration I have received is: upon looking at the
trademark skills of the two people I researched, I
picked out the skills I was going to take into my work
and I then practiced them. This gave me a good form of
primary research to go along with my secondary. Also,
the practice will help me be more professional when
actually filming.
How will this be useful to your I have gained a lot of ideas of content for my
planning? documentary and how I am going to film the content
through the research I have done this week. This will
make my planning a lot faster as I have already
decided a lot of what I am going to do and just need to
write it down in an order that makes my documentary
flow nicely.

What work do you need to complete I completed some of my research into my medium
outside of lessons to stay on track? outside of lesson time. I am caught up with work now
however.
