GUIDELINES, RULES, SCOPE AND MECHANICS

I. MATH AND SCIENCE QUIZ

A. RULES AND GUIDELINES:


1. Each member institution shall be represented by a total of eight (8) students, two (2)
per subject area in the quiz category, and two (2) contestants for the PCSMT
Ambassador and Ambassadress. Alternate contestants are optional.

2. One (1) coach will be assigned per Quiz area. Assistant coaches are optional. No
Coach is needed for the PCSMT Ambassador and Ambassadress contestants. The
Coaches and participants in the quiz area can assist the contestants in this
competition.

3. Contestant must:
a) be a bonafide tertiary student of the university who has not earned any
bachelor’s degree;
b) participate in one (1) field only; and
c) not have been a champion in the field to be participated in.

4. The official list of delegation certified by the Registrar as proof of official enrollment of
the contestants and signed by the College/University Head and should be submitted
to the PCSMT Secretariat at least one (1) week before the contest date, or if not
possible, this certified list should be submitted upon registration at the venue. Failure
to submit this document shall result to disqualification of participation to the
competitions.

B. SCOPE:
1. Questions/subject matters to be included in the quiz shall cover the following:
a. Biology - 100% fundamental concepts, theories, Technology application
and principles

b. Chemistry- 50% theories, concepts and Technology application; 50% problem


solving

b. Physics - Optics and Acoustics, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity


and Magnetism, Modern Physics, (50% theories, technology
application and concepts; 50% problem solving)

c. Mathematics - Algebra, Plane Trigonometry, and Analytic Geometry,


Technology application (100% problem solving).

C. MECHANICS:
1. Questions/problems will be prepared by the consultants who are considered
authorities in the four (4) subject areas. They shall prepare ten (10) easy questions,
ten (10) average questions, and (5) difficult questions plus additional tie-breaking
questions. Easy questions shall be given 1 point, 2 points for average, and 3 points
for difficult questions. Questions are to be prepared in print (Contestants’ copy) and
in soft copy (PowerPoint for audience information).

2. Numbers shall be assigned to each participating institution for proper identification


purposes, especially during the scoring process.
3. During the Quiz proper, at least one (1) meter between contestants must be strictly
observed on all sides. A wider distance must be provided between the contestants
and the audience.

4. Two (2) PCSMT Coordinators shall be assigned as official tabulators in the scoring
sheets, and one (1) on the LED/TV screen.

5. Proctors shall be assigned to each competing team. They shall be in-charge of


distributing the quiz questions, raising the slate boards after the allotted time for each
question, and facilitating the scoring process.

6. Only white board markers and slate boards shall be used for the final answers during
the quiz. Loose sheets shall be provided for computation.

7. The consultants may decide to allow the use of calculator in his/her area in some
particular question/s. Only CASIO FX-350ex model can be used by the participants.
The calculators to be used by the respective contestant shall be checked by the
coordinators before the quiz proper to make sure that only the prescribed calculators
will be used.

8. During the quiz proper, the Quiz Masters (QM) shall also serve as the Quiz
Consultants in their specific field. The mechanics of the quiz proper is specified
below:

a. At the beginning of each round, the QM shall announce the time allotment for
each question in the round. As a standard, for none-computation questions, a
minimum of 20 seconds for easy round, 30 seconds for average round, and 45
seconds for difficult round may be allowed. For questions that entails
computation. The QM may decide the time allotment depending on the difficulty
or length of computation involved.

b. Initially, each question shall be distributed facedown to each competing team


by the student facilitators.

c. The QM shall give direction to the contestants when to open the questions and
gives signal for the assigned timer when to start timing.

d. After the allotted time, the QM shall direct the contestants to stop writing, and
the proctors to raise the answer boards.

e. The QM shall then show on PowerPoint presentation the question at hand and
gives the correct answer for the question.

f. The QM shall recognize the team/s who got the correct answer. The proctors
shall facilitate proper scoring of the correct answers.

g. Scores shall be recorded by the official tabulators on the official score sheets
and shall be projected on the screen for the information of the audience.

h. These procedures shall be repeated for each question in the three rounds of
the quiz.

9. Complaints/clarifications may be directed only by the participants (not by a coach) to


the QM right after the correct answer is given. The decision of the consultant/QM is
final.

10. No negative point shall be appropriated to any incorrect answer.

11. The team with the highest score shall be declared as the Champion in each subject
area. In case of a tie, clincher questions shall be given via a “knock out system” until
a winner is finally declared.

D. Awards and Prizes:


1. Top three (3) winners in the quiz shall receive cash incentives, certificates of
recognition, and medals. Fourth (4th) and fifth place (5th) place shall receive
certificates of recognition.
2. Winning coaches (1st to 5th place) shall also receive certificates of recognition.

3. Over- All Championship - The over-all champion will be determined by ranking of


scores in the four (4) quiz areas. In case of ties for the first three places, the grand
total points will be considered. In case of tie in both ranks and grand total points,
both will be given the appropriate award.

4. There will be no equivalent scores to be added in the over-all tabulation of Math-


Science Quiz scores for the winners in search for Mr. and Ms. Category.

5. Trophies will be awarded to the Top Five (5) winners.

II. Search for Mr. and Ms. PCSMT


Guidelines:
A. Qualifications:
1. The contest is open to all students of the different state universities who are enrolled
in degree programs along science, technology and mathematics.
2. Each state university is encouraged to send one male and female candidates.
3. For female candidates, height must be at least 5 ft. and can use 3-5 inches heels.
For the male candidates, height must be at least 5 ft and 5 in (5’5’’).

B. Pageant Proper:
1. The pageant proper shall be held on January 30, 2020 at Batangas State University.
2. The candidates shall undergo Creative Costume, Presentation of Video Advocacy
and, Question and answer portion.
4. For the production number, the candidates will wear the Search for Ambassador and
Ambassadress 2020 Official T-Shirt and black denim pants.
5. Top five finalists shall be selected among the candidates. There shall be a final
question for each candidate to determine the title holders.
6. Minor awards to be given are as follows:
a) People’s Choice Award
b) Social Media Favorites
c) Best in Creative Costume
d) Best in Video Advocacy
7. Major awards are as follows:
a) Mr. and Ms. Millennial 2020 (4th Runner Up)
b) Mr. and Ms. TECHNOLOGY 2020 (3rd Runner Up)
c) Mr. and Ms. MATHEMATICS 2020 (2nd Runner Up)
d) Mr. and Ms. SCIENCE 2020 (1st Runner Up)
e) PCSMT AMBASSADOR AND AMBASSADRESS 2020

C. For the Video Advocacy:


1. The content of the video must revolve around the promotion of science, technology
and mathematics to the community.
2. The video should run for a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 2 minutes. One
(1) point is deducted from their scores for every 10 seconds in excess
3. Video resolution should be at least 720p. The video format can be in .avi, .wmv, .mov,
.mp4.
4. It should be original and not have been submitted to any video contest.
5. All information presented in the video must be cited, giving credit to the original
source. Plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification.
6. The video must be submitted upon registration of the contestants to PCSMT Student
Chapter Officers

D. For the Creative Costume


1. The wardrobe shall promote science, mathematics and technology
2. The creative costume of the candidates shall be prepared in advance and shall be
made of indigenous/recycled materials for both male and female candidates.
3. Costumes should be wearable and bearable. For both male and female, head and
hand dress is allowed.

a) For Male Candidates:


The lower creative costume should be pants type. Upper costume should
be of any style as long as it adheres to the guidelines presented above.

b) For Female Candidates:


The creative costume should be gown type and should not exceed 1.5
meters in diameter. It must be flexible and should not hinder the movements
of the candidate in the stage.

Note: Any candidate who will not follow the guidelines for all the
wardrobes will incur a deduction of two (2) pts. from the total averaged
score.

Important:
1. The decision of the board of judges will be final and irrevocable.

2. The PCSMT Ambassador and Ambassadress 2020 together with their


runners up will serve as a role model in the promotion of awareness and
understanding of science, technology and mathematics. They must also
support and promote all the activities of the PCSMT-National Student
Chapter.
