Education 3601: C & I for Physical Education Majors

Yoga and Mindfulness Unit Plan

February 15th, 2020

Emma Walker
Introduction:

Part of my philosophy includes the concept of physical education incorporating not

only fitness but also mental health. My unit-plan on yoga and mindfulness combines both of

these categories and will help students to become more aware of their physical and mental

portions of their body. The concept of this is to help students to understand that both of these

essential parts can be combined and that we should strive to take care of both. Yoga is a great

exercise that has many physical benefits but also helps us to connect our mind, body and soul.

Mindfulness is a useful technique that students can use throughout their schooling and life, it will

become a great tool for students whether they experience stress, need help relaxing or preparing

for a big game.

This unit plan will hit all general outcomes of activity, benefits health, cooperation

and do it daily for life! This unit is designed for students to be active while learning yoga,

learning about the benefits of using yoga and mindfulness and the positive health benefits that

correlate with it. It will also incorporate an inclusive and kind classroom environment where my

students will learn the community around yoga. Finally, I strive for my students to take this unit

and implement it into their everyday lives as a resource they can use whenever needed. My unit

plan will work on more specific outcomes such as using yoga postures to move their bodies in

new ways; yoga is very helpful for bending, twisting and stretching. Students will reflect upon

the benefits of yoga and mindfulness and be able to recognize the importance of these activities

in individual’s lives and the connection to stress management. This unit is also designed to help

create a caring environment that includes and accepts everyone; students will learn the value of

respecting their selves and others. Finally, I hope that students take these skills and apply them
outside of school. Students will have gained the proper skills and techniques to help them if they

decide to take their practice outside of the classroom.

Assessment Plan

Formative:

Throughout my daily plans I will mainly be formatively assessing my students

through observation, discussions/questions and exit slips. I will be observing students on their

understanding of how to complete the appropriate postures, as well as their understanding of

mind body connection and incorporating compassion into class. These are all components we

will discuss during the intro to yoga class; my goal is for students to understand how they will

carry through in everything we do during this unit. Observation will take place throughout each

lesson, watching for their ability and effort to move through the activities. There will always be

time for questions and discussion periodically throughout each lesson to check for student

understanding. I use exit slips almost everyday, this is a great formative assessment so that I can

keep track of each individual students direct understanding of the daily lesson. Some of the exit

slips will be visual, for example they will show me 1 posture we learned from the day, the exit

slips would also be verbal to help with differentiation. I will be adaptable and flexible with my

formative assessments throughout the unit according to my students and quick check in for

understanding for example if I need a quick thumbs up thumbs down for the activity.

Summative:

Each day student’s will be assessed on a score out of 3 for participation/attendance; this

score will mark students on their attendance, whether they are participating as well as their

attitude. A total of (18%) will be provided for this assessment. If a student is absent and has an
appropriate reason they will be excused from this mark and it will not affect their mark. The

reason I decided to add this mark in is to provide motivation for this unit, I want students to

come to class, participate and try their best to be positive and effortful. This is also a way to help

students with their mark it is an easy way for all students to gain extra bump in their grades.

Yoga and mindfulness might be a fairly new concept to most students and my goal is for them to

engage in the activities and learn to be positive about the experience.

I will have a wellness binder where I keep resources and students work for this unit, on

the second and third day I have them complete a posture quiz, which will be worth (12%) total.

This quiz is for them to become familiar with the postures and history of yoga. It will only mark

them on what they have learned so far, it will be partner work and it will consist of a matching

question of postures as well as an additional question prompting the students to explain one new

thing they learned about yoga. It will be out of 6 marks, 5 marks consist of matching five

different postures and 1 mark for the last question. I will then collect these at the end of the class;

students will have access to these items for practice if needed. The purpose of this quiz is for

them to show me they are participating and listening, as well help them to remember the

postures.

There will be group work during class time prior to this during the beginning of class

students will learn about sun salutations and a flow practice. We will work together as a class to

move through a practice, after our practice students will form groups of five and create their own

flow routine. This assignment is worth (20%) and broken up into the following requirements,

groups will need to create a name and a motto, which will be out of 10 marks. Groups will need

to incorporate at least five postures they have learned thus far in the unit, which will result in 5

marks. Additionally, they will need to present this routine to another group where the will then
provide and receive peer feedback. Each group will be given another 5 marks for completion of

feedback.

Students will be asked to complete a 1-page reflection after our mindfulness class worth

(20%), they will be prompted to reflect on their own mindfulness and how they can improve or

incorporate it within their lives. I will be looking for their connection to our learning so far and

their understanding on the techniques we used during class. This is a way for the students to

personally reflect and relate it to their own life so that they can do it daily.

Finally, students will be assigned to complete a 5-minute vlog reflection of our unit,

which will be out of (30%). It will be broken into three main categories that they will need to

reflect and talk about in their vlog. First, how have they progressed throughout the unit whether

physically or mentally and explain. Secondly, what are 2 things they learned or gained from this

yoga and mindfulness unit. Finally, how will they incorporate yoga and mindfulness into their

lives or whether they believe it is important why or why not. I want this assignment to be away

for the students to bring it altogether and reflect on the experience.
