Introduction
Gujarati spoken by approximacly 40 milion people in te State of
Gujarat, northwest India. In ation there are some 15 million
expotite Gujarts throughout the world, particulary in the United
‘Kingdom, the United States and Africa, where ley play a prominent ole
in busines end industy.
Gara belongs to the Indo-Aryan group of languages, itself a
subgroup of the Indo-European family. Modern Gujarat, along with
Rejasthani and Braj (Western Hindi), has its source in. Shauseni
Apubbramsta, a language which fll into disuse around the twelfth
centr.
There are four principal dialects in Gujarati ~ Pattani, Surat
CChaciar and Kathitordgi — but the standard weten form used in
education, the media and Siteratire is followed by all. The script is
‘letved from Devnagai, wed for Sanskrit I is « much more phonetic
script than English and, in that sense, easier wo ead.
There ae some sounds in Gujrat which have no equivalent in
English, Te information contained inthis book wil asst dhe student
with thee sounds But at best they are an approximation, It is only by
listening to the spoken language that cect pronunciation will be
Achieved. Radio, television, video and films offer an excellent way of
achieving this end, nd two audi tapes are availble in conjunction with
this book. Thebes posible solution to spend time with mative Gujarati
speakers.
