the reader can follow. These five components are theme, plot, setting, characterization,
and point of view.
3. Structure of story is how the story is organized. It is the framework of the story.
4. Rhetorical elements is used by the author as supporting elements to deliver the meaning
to audience. Like the use of foreshadowing, mood, symbolism, figurative language, and
irony.
5. Meaning of the story contains the message that the writer try to deliver to audience
through the supportive story elements and theme.
Essential Elements of the Story
(Volpone by Ben Johnson)
1. Plot
Exposition : Volpone’s scam and meets his victims.
Rising action : Volpone pretends to be on his deathbed after long illness in order
to trick Voltore, Corbaccio, and Corvino who are interested to be the heir
of his estate.
Conflict : Mosca and the other parasites’ intention to live off the wealth of
others than do honest work.
Climax : Celia (Corvino’s wife) is attacked by Volpone as she arrives but
then is rescued by Bonario.
Falling action : The trials of Volpone including Corvino, Corbaccio, and Voltore
by the judges that lead them to various punishments.
Resolution : Volpone angered at Mosca’s betrayal.
2. Character : Volpone, Mosca, Voltore, Corbaccio, Corvino
3. Setting : Venice, Italy in 1606
4. Point of View : First person
5. Theme : Greed, parasitism, vengeance
Rhetorical Elements
Foreshadowing : Mosca’s soliloquy.
Mood : Blackly vile.
Symbolism
Animalization -> the character’s name associate with animals (Volpone means
fox; Mosca means; Corvino means crow).
Venice -> Italian were known as deceivers in the eye of English people.
Figurative language
Metaphor -> The vulture’s gone, and the old raven’s come! (Act 1 Scene 3)
Simile -> Those filthy eyes of yours, that flow with smile, Like two frog-pits; and
those same hanging cheeks. (Act 1 Scene 4)
Irony : Punishing the innocent one, in this case is Celia who is accused
by Volpone then promptly is named as an adulterer by
Lady Would-Be.
