1. Engage (3) “In class today, we are going to write opinion essays. 3 mins
Can someone tell me what an opinion is?”
“An opinion is a view someone has about something
that doesn’t have to be based on fact. I have an opinion
on Twix bars. I don’t think they are good becuase the
caramel tastes bad. That’s my opinion; someone else
might not have the same opinion as I do but it’s okay to
have different opinions.”

2. Explore (3) “I have handed out an opinion sheet. On this sheet, you 10-12 mins
are going to write down an opinions you have that
impact you and our school or community around us. I
might be passionate about no school uniforms so I
would write down ‘no school uniforms’ at the top. But
I’m not stopping there. I am going to write two more
opinions I have. Take 5 minutes to write down three
opinions on your sheet. Go!”

you need?” “Great. Let’s take 5 more minutes to write
our reasons in full sentences. Go!”

your computers and find fact based evidence or
supporting details that go help show your opinion. You
are going to write down what you find on the back of
your opinion sheet. Get your computers out and take 8
minutes to research your topic. GO!”

paper/pencil or using laptops on google docs. They will
work on their writing for two more days after this.
