DeLAND’S
Among mental effects, DeLand’s most
elaborate was one which appeared as
“DeLand’s Card Puzzle” in a booklet
called “Did The Devil Invent a Deck
of Cards” and which was marketed sep
rately as
THE MILLION DOLLAR
Nine lary
andience, each chart bea
ing cards, thirty to a sh
of five each, Somebody was told to
think of a card and hand the performer
all charts which showed that eard on
them,
‘This done, the performer named the
n card
‘The first seven charts enabled the per
former to learn the position of the
chosen card on one of the last two
charts which were “key” charts. Which-
ever of the first seven were handed to
the performer, he noted th value of the
card in the lower left corner, adding the
total of all such cards
Given a “key” chart which showed
the chosen card, the performer simply
counted to thaf number and found the
selected card, which he promptly named.
Example: The Que

the key chart showing the Queen of

Sinee space prevents the reproduction
of the full charts, they are listed here-
with in
form so that performers
‘ean make up their own charts with mini-
ature cards or use larger charts with
full-sized playing eards for presentation
before an audience.
However, we are reproducing two
versions of a later, singlechart mental
mystery which was based on the “Mil

RADIO MIND READING
Showing the chart to a person, the
performer asks him to think of a card,
then look for its index, row by row,
fon the chart. He is to state the letter
or number of the row in which the in
dex of his card appears.
Alll the performer does is add men
tally the numbers of the rows whieh the
spectator names. The card will appear
in only one of the lettered rowa: A or
B. The performer counts along that
row to the total of the numbered rows
named and at the proper position, he
finds the chosen card indicated.
‘The horizontal numbers at top and
bottom of the chart enable the performer
to do this very rapidly, He does not
mention these numbers when perform:
ing the trick, but simply uses them for
Both versions of this trick appeared
at about the same time and though the
principle is the same in each case, it
will be observed that the total number
of rows is different in each ease and
that the arrangement of the card indexes
varies as a result
