UNIT-I
1(a) Develop the classical model of a Multi Machine system.
(b) A synchronous machine having inertia constant with 4MJ/MVA is initially operated in
steady state against an infinite bus with angular displacement of 300 and delivering I.O.P.U
Power. Find the natural frequency of oscillation assuming small perturbation from the point.

2. A synchronous machine is connected to an infinite bus through a transformer and a


double circuit line. The infinite bus voltage is 1.0 p.u. The Direct Axis transient
reactance of the machine is 0.2 p.u, the transformer reactance is 0.10 pu, and the
reactance if each of the transmission lines is 0.40 pu, all to a base of the machine rating
of the synchronous machine. Initially the machine is delivering a power of 0.8 p.u with a
terminal voltage of 1.05 pu. The inertia constant H = 5 MJ/MVA. All resistances are
neglected. Find the swing equation.

3(a) Explain the various steps in the data preparation for stability studies of Multi
Machine system
(b) Explain the effect of excitation system on transient stability.

4(a) Discuss in detail about transient stability and steady state stability of Power system.
(b) Explain the modes of oscillation of unregulated multi-machines system.

5.Starting from assumption derive the necessary mathematical model of single


Machine connected to infinite system for stability studies

6. Explain the concept of Equal area criterion for SMIB system

7. For the circuit shown in figure below, let V=1.0 pu, Xd’= 0.4 pu and the machine is
initially operating at (i) Pe= 0.8 pu at 0.85 pf (ii) Pe =0.9 pu at 0.95 pf. Calculate the rotor
angle and mechanical power at the time of transient condition. re=0.0,

UNIT-II AND III


1 (a) Explain the concept of dynamic stability and show that the power is invariant in the
dynamic Stability.
(b) Stating from assumptions derive the power angle equations Pe and obtain the Ps
2 (a) Explain the concept of speed governor with one time lag.
(b) Explain the effect of small changes of speed on a multimachine system.

3(a) Show that for a three-machine interconnected transmission system under unregulated
condition is oscillatory
(b) Explain the effect of excitation system on transient stability and dynamic stability

machines
9. With a neat block diagram discuss the Voltage regulator with one time lag of a Regulated
Synchronous machine with one time lag

1. With neat diagram, explain a non-continuously acting regulator system
2. Develop a state space model for IEEE type-2 excitation system
3. Derive state space model for IEEE type-3 excitation system

5. With neat block diagram, discuss about linear system model for synchronous machine with
an exciter and power system stabilizers

3. Illustrate the method of quadratic forms of constructing Lyapunov functions with suitable
example
