1 (a) Describe the different modes of operation of


thyristor with the help of its static V – I
characteristics.

(b) How does a GOT differ from a conventional


thyristor? Give its circuit symbol and static V – I

2 (a) For a single phase one pulse controlled converter


system, sketch waveforms for load voltage, load
current for (i) RL load (ii) RL load with
freewheeling diode across RL. From a comparison
of these waveforms, discuss the advantages of using
a freewheeling diode.
(b) A 230V, 50Hz, one pulse SCR controlled converter
is triggered at a firing angle of 40 0 and load current
extinguishes at an firing angle of 2100. Find the
circuit turn off time, average output voltage and

3 For a 3phase full converter, explain how output voltage


wave for a firing angle of 30 0 is obtained by using (a)

4 Discuss the effect of source inductance on the


performance of a single phase full converter indicating
clearly the conduction of various thyristors during one
cycle. Derive expressions for its output voltage in terms
of (i) maximum voltage Vm, firing angle α and overlap
angle and (ii) Vm, α, Vs and load current I0. Here Ls is
source inductance.
5 (a) Describe the principle of step up chopper. Derive an
expression for the average output voltage in terms
of input D.C. voltages and duty cycle. State the
assumptions made.

(b) A step up chopper has input voltage of 220V and


output voltage of 660V. If the non conducting time
of thyristor chopper is 100μs, compute the pulse
width of output voltage.
