Description: The students will learn about wedding traditions
in Spain and will be required to compare them to Cypriot
traditions. Students will become aware of our ICH and of the
importance of conserving our ICH and how this can be
achieved. All language skills will be included and applied
during the 4 lessons.
Learning outcomes:
Students will become aware of a variety of aspects
concerning a traditional Cypriot wedding and will discuss
which elements are rarely practiced today and which
elements are still clearly visible in a contemporary Cypriot
Lesson What is the wedding.
Overview purpose of Students will discuss and explain, using basic Spanish, why
the lesson? it is important to preserve our ICH and how the past is
closely connected to the present and the future.
Students will also discuss ways in which to preserve ICH
Materials: All materials have been uploaded online and
include a listening comprehension, a reading comprehension,
writing a short paragraph/essay in Spanish, two videos, a
worksheet and some photographs and a language exercise of
relating two texts.
Technical requirements: a computer and an overhead
projector for the classroom. A computer or tablet with
internet access at home.
Time required: 4 lessons (45 minutes each)
At the end of the course, the students will:
Understand:
the similarities and differences between
Spanish and Cypriot values related to wedding
celebrations.
How traditions affect the present and the future
generations
Know:
Vocabulary pertinent to marriages.
How to compare and contrast two different cultures and
traditions.
Rituals and customs of a traditional Cypriot wedding
Do:
Analyze the pros and cons of a traditional wedding
performed 60-70 years ago.

Interview an elderly family member or friend about their
wedding day. Work in pairs and report their findings to the
rest of the class.
Try to discuss in Spanish the importance of preserving ICH.
It is an integral part of our values and culture.

Session 1 Lesson procedure and sequence – Activities and tasks to engage
students
Prior to the lesson students will be required to see the video Una
Boda Española uploaded in
http://www.pearltrees.com/annetteevangelou and also read the
questions on the worksheet that are related to the video. This
will enable them to work at their own speed, see the video as
many times as they feel is necessary, making notes of the main
points and of the new vocabulary needed in Spanish.
Whole class: In this first session we will begin discussing the

activities: Pair work: Once the grid has been completed the next step is for
the students to work in pairs, discussing the equivalent tradition
in a Cypriot wedding.
Whole class: Once the grid has been completed the class will
discuss the various points and the teacher will explain the
meaning of ICH and attempt to increase the students’ awareness
on the topic. The teacher will ask why it is important, why it
should be preserved and how can it be preserved.
Homework: Students are required to see uploaded video in

traditional cypriot wedding (specifically prepared for the
programme Erasmus + that our school is involved in), making
note of:
a) customs no longer practiced
b) customs still in practice today
Session 2 Lesson procedure and sequence – Activities and tasks to engage students
Whole class: The session will begin with a listening
comprehension about a Spanish wedding and students will be
required to complete a worksheet with statements that students
must mark as either true or false.
Pair work: After the exercise has been completed students will
be asked to work in pairs and, based on the listening
comprehension, to name two differences and two similarities

Language: Review and elaborate on use of SER and ESTAR
with adjectives, difference in meaning.
Whole class: Ask for comments on video the students were
required to see for homework and list non-practicing and
practicing wedding traditions.
Pair work: The task for the students is to create a questionnaire
aimed at an elderly relative, friend or member of the community
about their wedding. The teacher should circulate amongst the
students, guiding where necessary and ensuring that every
student comprehends what is required of him/her.
The objective of the task is for students to accumulate the
necessary evidence, upload it to the platform, present it to the
class as a PowerPoint presentation* and attempt to see the link
between the past and the present.
Language objective: One of the language areas to be covered in
depth is the use of the past tense in Spanish ( pretérito
indefinido) and this exercise will greatly assist practicing this verb
tense.

Whole class: The language objective is a reading comprehension
adapted from an authentic blogger who attended a wedding in Cyprus.
The text has been simplified to the students’ level of language. The
mian points of the blog will be discussed with the students; new
vocabulary and expressions will be commented on along with the use of
the past tense. The questions to be answered are multiple choice
questions and emphasis is placed on developing the skill of a) the
Flexible Lesson process of elimination of incorrect answers and b) finding a
learning delivery & synonymous way of expressing an idea in order to select the correct
types of answer.

Pair work: Discuss the text and ask students to work in pairs and
discuss; did the wedding contain many traditional elements?
Which aspects can be compared and are similar to those found in
Spain?
Homework: In order to broaden the students’ horizon I will ask
them to find out about and make notes on Spain’s ICH and to
come to the next class with some information and a list.
Session 4 Lesson procedure and sequence – Activities and tasks to engage students
The purpose of this last session is twofold:
1) Exam techniques: These students are in their final year at
school and will take an entrance exam in Spanish at the end of
the year. It is of utmost importance that they develop their exam
skills. I have uploaded two assignments that can be completed
online and submitted to me for correction.
