1.7 Protective Relays Applied To A Unit Transformer

Unit transformer protection is similar to network transformer protection when located at major generating stations. However, unit transformer protection also includes an overall differential protection for the generator and transformer. Figure 5 shows a delta-wye unit transformer protected with differential relays on both the high and low sides, as well as the overall differential protection for the generator and transformer.

7 Protective relays applied to a unit transformer

Protection of unit transformers is very similar to that of network transformers when unit
transformers are at major generating stations. A major difference is that a generator-transformer
overall differential protection is also included as shown in Figure 5. Generator protection is not
shown in this figure because it is out of the scope of this report.
