The Smithsonian and its Facilities
Operations &
Maintenance
• 600+ buildings; 12 million sq. ft.
• Museums, laboratories, field stations,
telescopes
Security Planning
• Monumental and historic icons
• Collection care for 137 million artifacts, Administration
including living collections
Design &
Safety
Construction
• Over 6,000 employees and 6,000
volunteers
• 1800+ facilities staff
• Open 364 days per year
• High rate of visitation: 26.8 million per
year (2014)
2
Why implement BIM?
• Building Information
models are used by
contract architect‐
engineers but are not
required deliverables for
projects
We recognize that there is
wasted effort: AEs use 3D
BIM for design but only
deliver the 2D version to SI
We Want Both Versions!
3
Smithsonian Goals for Facilities BIM
• Leverage industry trends to improve facilities information management
• Develop standards to ensure consistent data deliverables
• Align BIM requirements with project work processes and staff capabilities
• Align BIM data deliverables with existing Smithsonian facility requirements:
• CAD guidelines, continuity of master architectural records
• OFEO Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) System ‐ Facility Center,
asset attribution
Not impede, interfere with creativity of
new design new projects

Prototyping: Project Documentation Development
• Units of Measure ‐ Imperial/Metric
• Project sheets, title blocks, sheet numbering
• Standard “views” (floor plans, schedules, sheets)
• CAD exports – file names, layering
• Drawing standards (National CAD Standard v5) and annotations
• Base point (0,0,0) location for BIMs
11
SI BIM Templates
• Provides a standardized Revit work environment to foster
consistency in BIM development– for both AEC project teams
and internal SI initiatives
• Support SI spatial data management by providing SI data fields
and geometry for rooms and floors, and standard attributes
• Standardize model development, BIM guidelines and CAD
exports with National CAD Standard and SI document
conventions, standardize views and naming conventions
• Provide SI‐specific asset data parameters and schedule views
for O&M
12
Revit Template User’s Guide
• Guidance for AEC project teams
(primarily)
• Develop consistent model development
across projects (and in‐house)
• Not a tutorial – expect reader to know
Revit
• Walks the user through Smithsonian
minimum standards
• Based on National CAD Standard (v5) 5
• Customized title blocks, syntax for SI
• Identifies “Best Practices” (items not
required)
13
• A living document populated and
updated by the project team
• Clarifies and maintains the project
BIM development process for the
owner, and the team
• Provides a vetting process for any
changes made in the BIM
development process
14
Guidance for BIM Deliverables
Level of Development Guide
• SI has developed a guidance framework
for the level development required for
BIM deliverables
• BIM LOD will be identified early in the
project (passed on to the team to detail
in the project BIM PxP)
• The Scope of Work of the project
ultimately defines the BIM requirements

Supporting SI BIM Project Reviews
BIM Viewers
• Provides a means to review developing
project models by SI users who are not
Revit experts
• Offers versatile methods for viewing BIM:
PDFs, mobile devices
Model Checkers
• Provides an automated means to check
a BIM against a customized rule set
• Useful by SI and by their project
consultants
BIM Deliverables Aligned with SI Requirements
Project Execution Plan (PxP) details a file structure that aligns with SI requirements
3. Project Folder Structure
SI recommends the folder structure illustrated in
the Figure: Project Folder Structure. Following a
project folder structure, will facilitate in delivering
the Revit project files while maintaining the links to
all the external linked files as long as the linked files
are defined using relative path within Revit model.
A relative path defines the position of a linked file in
a working directory such as a project folder. Its
position is defined by its relative location. An
absolute path defines the location of a linked file on
a disk or network drive. If a relative path is used for
links and later the project and the linked files are
moved together to a new directory, the link is
maintained. Revit tries to find the linked model by
its relative position to the working directory.

Developing In‐house
BIM Capabilities
Sylvia Kendra, GISP
Smithsonian Institution
34
When and Why to Develop BIMs In‐house
Richer project data translates to
• Better foundation information for
building automation systems
• Robust information for facilities
management and analysis
• Improved starting point for future
design projects
35
Leverage BIM‐centric Talent
The key is creating strong partnerships between BIM contractors and staff
36
Managing Complexities
Managing the complexities of evolving software, organizational workflows and
requirements, plus more and more data
• Stay a few steps behind the industry
• Software versions
• Challenges in archiving
• Versions upgrade more often with subscription services
• File formats: Revit, IFCs, CAD, PDFs
• Defining what is BIM? LOD? As‐built vs. working BIMs, partial BIMs
• Cloud computing ‐‐ FedRAMP
37
Selecting Projects for BIM
Consider BIM for:
• New Construction or Alterations Projects (adding to the real property footprint)
• Larger projects and scopes with significant architectural modifications
• Technical projects (labs, conservation areas)
• Iconic buildings and core public‐use facilities
• Projects having experienced BIM AEC teams (becoming de facto)
‐ All projects employing BIM should require BIM deliverables regardless of
whether it is employed in project reviews by the SI
38
Managing Change – What’s Next
• Model Checker to • Asset Management Work Processes
assist both from one‐way to two‐way
contractors and SI communication between BIM and
staff in verifying CAFM
data accuracy – • Manage expectations…
especially in
complex
deliverables.
• BIM Viewer –
easy to use ‐‐ to
facilitate early
project
visualization by
clients and
reviewers
