1. Explain  the  concept  of  electromotive  force?  
2. Calculate  the  energy  stored  in  electric  and  magnetic  fields.  
3. Explain  why  and  how  Maxwell  fixed  Ampere’s  Law?  
4. Derive  the  precise  nature  of  discontinuities  in  E,B,  D  and  H  using  integral  form  of  
Maxwell’s  equation  at  the  interface.  
5. Derive  Poynting  theorem  in  integral  and  differential  form  and  explain  its  physical  
significance.  
6. A  square  loop  of  wire  (side  a)  lies  on  a  table,  a  distance  s  from  a  very  long  straight  
wire,  which  carries  a  current  I    as  shown  in  figure  1.  0                                                                                                                                                                          
(a)  Find  the  flux  of  B  through  the  loop.  
(b)  if  someone  now  pulls  the  loop  directly  away  from  the  wire,  at  speed  v  ,  what  emf  
is  generated  ?  In  what  direction  (clockwise  or  anticlockwise)  does  the  current  flow?

7. A  square  loop,  side  a,  resistance    R    ,  lies  a  distance  s  from  an  infinite  straight  wire  
that  carries  current  I  (see  figure  below)  .  Now  someone  cuts  the  wire  ,so  that  I  drops  
to  zero  .  In  what  direction  does  the  induced  current  in  the  square  loop  will  flow,  and

electromagnetic  waves  travelling  in  non-­‐conducting  media.  
4. Calculate  the  average  momentum  density  and  average  power  in  terms  of  average  
energy  density  for  an  electromagnetic  wave.  
5. Discuss  in  detail  reflection  and  transmission  at  normal  incidence.  
6. Discuss  in  detail  reflection  and  transmission  at  oblique  incidence.  
7. Explain  the  propagation  of  electromagnetic  waves  in  conducting  media,  write  the  
modified  Maxwell’s  equations  and  derive  expressions  for  wavevector  for  poor  
conducturs  and  bad  condictors.  
8. Discuss  reflection  and  transmission  at  conducting  surface.  
9. Explain  in  detail  the  phenomenon  of  dispersion  on  non-­‐conducting  media.

5.   Compare  Coulomb’s  and  Lorentz  gauge  and  derive  the  wave  equation  in  terms  of
