When To Use A Stiffening Member

Stiffening members are used to simulate joint elements between cross-sections and cannot be assigned internal forces. They are not part of the original finite element analysis model. Stiffening members are used when joints need to be represented but no loads need to be applied to the member. Examples of when to use stiffening members include representing cross-bracing connections and T-joints between beams and columns.

When to use a stiffening member


We use stiffening members to simulate a joint element with cross-sections. The basic difference between a standard member
and stiffening member is, that we can not input any internal forces on the stiffening member. This means, that stiffening
member is not a part of your original FEA 1D member analysis model. Basically, we use standard members only if we need
to apply load/constrain on them.
