After all the Casing has been

landed and cemented in the
Well (this is done by drilling
department) the Tubulars are
run. This is known as
“Running the Completion”.

Each piece of equipment run in

the well performs a specific
function.

The Completion is run and will

normally stay in the hole for a
long period of time

We will now look at this

equipment and its function in
more detail.

SLICKLINE SERVICES

Wireline Entry Guide, WEG.

Bell Guide - This guide has a 45ºlead in taper to

21 allow easy re-entry into tubing of wireline tools.
This guide will be used in a completion where
the end of the tubing does not the liner Hanger.

Mule Shoe Re- Entry Guide

Mule Shoe re-entry guide - This is essentially the

same as a bell guide, but with the modification of
60o angle on the outside of the guide. If the tubing
hangs up while attempting to run through a
Liner/Sealbore etc., tubing rotation will allow the
angled portion to slide into the Liner /Sealbore
and guide the tubing into the liner.

restriction below the

Perforated Pup Joint

19

In flowing wells the restriction in the

tubing, caused by a gauge hanger
could cause false pressure readings.

Vibrations in the tool, due to flow could

cause damage to delicate gauges.

A perforated pup joint (approx. 10`

long) set above the bomb hanger
nipple, permits flow unrestricted
passage around the gauges and
hanger, thus allowing accurate
pressure/temperature recording within
limitations of the gauge.

XN No-Go Landing Nipple
XN Lock

18

This nipple is the primary plugging point below

the packer and would be used during the initial
completion stage as a receptacle for a “test tool” (a
plug which only holds pressure from 1 direction
and is not attached to a lock devise) which would
hold pressure from above to set the packer and
also test the tubing. There after, the nipple would
be used for plugging with `XN` type locking device,
I.e. when tubing above the packer has to be pulled
for some reason, leaving the packer in the hole.

Millout Extension

17

Some times referred to as a Packer Plucker.

Generally a pup joint with a slightly larger I.D
than the packer.

Used to accommodate a spear during packer

milling operations, which enables the packer
and tail-pipe assembly to be retrieved in the
same run as the milling operation.

Packers
Halliburton has 4 Groups of Packers

1) Permanent Packer

2) Hydraulic Retrievable

3) Sealbore Retrievable

4) Mechanical Retrievable

16
A packer is a tool which
when set seals the
annulus between two
strings of pipe or a string
of pipe and the open hole.
It must also have the
capability of allowing flow
through it.

production treating etc.

Variations include
Travel Joint.
ELTSR.

is made up into assemblies prior to running

SLICKLINE SERVICES

Sliding Sleeve

A Circulating device
which allows
13 communication
between tubing and
annulus.
Used in Multi-Zone
Wells to allow flow
from zone into tubing.

Flow Couplings

12

A piece of thick walled

tubing designed to withstand
erosion due to turbulent flow
through a restriction.
ID is drift of tubing but OD is
collar OD.
SLICKLINE SERVICES
Tubing

Acts as the conduit

For the well fluids to
travel from the
reservoir to the
surface.
Or for injected fluids
11 from surface to
desired depth.
When run in
conjunction with a
packer will give an
annulus area for safety
and better well control.
