History Lesson Plan 1 21 20

This document outlines a lesson plan for a 9th grade US History class on Reconstruction. The 42-minute lesson will use virtual reality headsets and an app to take students on a tour of Ford's Theater and the site of Lincoln's assassination. After the tour, students will fill out exit tickets answering what they learned, found interesting, and were surprised by to demonstrate their understanding. The teacher reflected that students engaged well with the VR activity but some technical issues arose around app downloads and device space that disrupted the experience.

BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

● Reconstruction and its outcome shaped the United States that we live in today?
● What if reconstruction had happened differently?

ELIGIBLE CONTENT:

N/A

OBJECTIVE:

● Following a VR tour of Lincoln’s assassination, students will be able to list one thing they learned and
one thing that interested them and one thing that surpised them as an exit ticket to show they learned the
lesson.

MATERIALS:

● Cell Phones
● Google Cardboard
● Expeditions App

ACTIVITIES:

Intro

● The lesson will begin with an administrative side of things, some of which were handled the day before.
Students were informed prior to this day to download the Expeditions app and this will be checked to
start class. There is some leniency due to not knowing fully everyone’s individual situations regarding
technology. Students will then be instructed to connect to the proper wifi router I set up and I will begin
to pass out the Google Cardboard. Students will then join the tour.

BODY

● The lesson will consist of the VR tour of Ford’s Theater and Museum focusing on the Lincoln
assassination. The VR tour has multiple scenes with control features for the guide and talking point.
Students will be actively engaged in looking at the VR tour and also will be participating in discussion
as we move through.

CLOSURE

● The Google Cardboard will be collected and students will be handed a notecard. On this card students
will write one thing they learned, one thing they found interesting and one thing they were surprised by.
These will then be used as exit tickets and collected at the door on the way out. I will collect and review
these to check for any points I need to recover.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:

● Extra time will be allotted for anyone who needs it.

● Students can tour in pairs

ASSESSMENT:

● Students will have successfully met the objective if they properly fill out the three items (learned,
interested, surprised) on the notecards.

SELF-ASSESSMENT/REFLECTION:

The lesson went very well and the students were very engaged the entire time. They seem to really enjoy VR.
The only downside is the aspect of some students do not have the app while other do not have the space to keep
it on their phone and the school connection is so poor downloading can be an issue. This was easily fixed by
sharing but that inherently leads to small issues like talking and makes the teacher need to ensure everyone is
getting a turn.
