Q1. Read the extract below and answer the following questions:

“The poetry of the earth is never dead:

When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
From hedge to hedge about the new mown- mead;”

i. What does the poet mean when he says ‘The poetry of the earth is never dead’?
Ans: When the poet says ‘The poetry of the earth is never dead’ he is implying that nature
continues despite the season. Be it he harsh summers or the lone winters the earth is never
affected by it, it continues being persistent.
ii. How has the poet described the two seasons in this poem?
Ans: The poet describes the summer as very lively as the birds hide in the cool trees when they faint
with the hot sun but the grasshopper takes the lead and tirelessly runs about from hedge to hedge about
the new mown- mead and when tired he rests beneath some pleasant weed.

The winters however are frosty and lonely and while the poet sits by the fireplace the cricket’s song
increases the warmth and reminds him of the grasshopper and the summer.

iii. Elaborate on the symbolism used in this poem.

Ans: In this poem , the poet has beautifully used two little creatures symbolically. The poet has used
the Grasshopper to symbolically represent the season of summer and the Cricket to symbolically
represent the season of winter.

iv. Name and explain the personification used in this poem.

Ans: Personification is a figure of speech in which a non living thing or an abstract idea are given
human qualities. Throughout the poem the poet has made elaborate used of personification.
Some examples are The poetry of the earth is never dead, On a lone winter evening,
When the frost has wrought a silence, etc
