Mr. Ramanayake said superior quality, a wider range of products and
competitive prices has enabled Damro furniture to attract a wider
section of Customers in Chennai within two years.

"Opening the new branch in Cochin is our first step of moving out of
Chennai to other States of South India. We will strengthen our
network of branches here by opening our next branch in Banglalore
in the near future," Mr. Ramanayake said.

He said Sri Lanka has the potential to penetrate any international

market if we are innovative and willing to take up the challenge.

"The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and Sri Lanka poses
no threat to our business. In fact it facilitated our efforts to expand
our market beyond our country. If we can produce a range of quality
items at lesser costs there is a vast market in countries such as India
for us to explore," Mr. Ramanayake said.

Damro which, started business in 1986, has 20 showrooms and

1,800 dealers in Sri Lanka. Although the company produces a range
of plastic furniture for the local market it would focus more on
producing furniture of other materials for the Indian market, J. Sri
Nivasan, Marketing Manager, Damro Furniture (Tamilnadu) said.

"What we supply to the Indian market is mainly office furniture such

as computer tables and more sophisticated house furniture. When we
started business here in 2000 we found that Chennai was a very
competitive market with several local manufacturers and competitors
from countries such as Malaysia and China. We had to offer unique
products to the customers at lower prices. We have been successful
and today we have about 150 dealers there and account for about 20
percent of the market share in the furniture industry in Tamilnadu.
Damro products had won a prestigious award for the best imported
furniture in 2001, Mr. Sri Nivasan said.

He said, the company is planning to increase its income up to one

billion Indian rupees per annum by 2005.

"We will have branches in all major cities in India. Our aim is to
become one of the leading furniture companies in India," Mr. Sri
Nivasan said.
