TEACHING GUIDE
Have the students form pairs, then ask each pair to study and work together to solve the problem below:
A certain plant A grows up to 0.05cm every month, while plant B grows up to 0.65cm every month. If the initial
height of plan A is 10cm and plant B is 8 cm, find a function C9h) that represents the difference between the height
of plant A and plant B after six months.
The teacher will present and discuss to the class the lesson objectives. Call on volunteers to restate the lesson
objectives in their own words.
The teacher will discuss the topic of combining functions using the Definition and Examples on pages 33-37, and
demonstrate to the class how to combine functions using sample problems and instructional videos.
PRACTICE
Form small groups with four members. Every member of the group must explain how to combine (add, subtract,
multiply, and divide) function. Let the students work together in answering Practice and Application I, numbers 1, 4,
and 10 only, on page 38.
ENRICHMENT
The teacher will further discuss word problems on combining functions using examples 2-3 on pages 35-35. Conduct
a quick check by asking the students to answer the anchor task given in the opening of the lesson.
Identify the students who are doing well and those who are in need of assistance. Provide scaffolding to both groups
of students.
Advanced student: instruct them to create their own problems that involve combining functions. They can work with
other students in the same group.
Struggling students: ask them to watch instructional video on modeling real-life situations by combining functions.
Through guided discussion, lead them in soving similar word problems.
Ask the students to answer Practice and Application II, number 14 and 16 only, on page 38.
Identify the students who are doing well and those who are in need of assistance. Provide scaffolding to both group of
students.
Advanced students: instruct them to watch instructional video on modeling with composite functions. Then, ask them
to answer the exercises on modeling with composite function.
Struggling StudentsL using some items the task and think aloud, demonstrate to class how to evaluate conpostie
function. Give similar questions for students to work on.
EVALUATION
Independent Task 1:
For combining functions, solve Practice And Application I, numbers 2, 3, and 6 only, on page 38.
Independent Task 2:
Solve the exercises on evaluating composite functions using Practice and Application II, numbers 13 and 18
only, on page 38.
Independent Task 3:
Prepare a semi-directed math journal as a Pause and Reflect activity (Lujan 2011) using the prompt below:
How do we combine (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) functions?
