Discipline and Self-control
A frank discussion with Swamishri was led by Milind.
Milind: These kids leave behind litter so the elders become annoyed.
Swamishri: The mandir should be kept clean. Clean up and then go home.
Cleanliness is a habit that is learnt at home. A clean mandir is a nice
mandir. Your home and office should be neat and tidy. Even your shoes
should not be left anywhere. Clothes should be folded and put in the closet.
If you learn to help yourself, the elders will not need to scold you.
Swamishri: This is wrong. Our rules and discipline in this aspect of our life

have to be obeyed. All of us come to the mandir for seva, katha, holy
association. Where does the need arise for us to talk to the girls. We lose
our decency by this. We are breaking God's command by such indiscretion
in the mandir. Other people also question such inappropriate behavior.
Milind: The elders accuse us of only playing in the mandir and not doing
seva. We have also decided to vow not to play until all seva has been
completed.
Swamishri: Yes, you have a busy schedule here, there are many things to be
done... and I also have two suggestions which if you feel correct you may
imbibe in your lives. Partying and garba... don't go to these. You will find this
difficult, but if you are firm in mind you will experience no problems.
Although it is difficult in this country, the mind is to be disciplined. You all
know of the people who have been ruined by TV or are at present being
ruined. See this discipline not as bondage but as a source of virtue.
A tree depends on its survival on its roots. Because the roots are there,
there is growth, fruits ripen. Smilingly, dharma-niyam-discipline are for our
growth and good.
Adultery can lead to AIDS. If one has no constraint on one's sense pleasure
enjoyment, disease results. Niyams have been given for the good of society,
for good health, and to earn the pleasure of God. Religious vows are for our
good.
In this country, if you are firm, you really will be able to stay within the
vows. Why cannot you keep vows! I won't eat! I won't see! This type of
conviction is necessary.
Where's Vipul..? Here he is... for the past five years he has not seen TV, and
he has experienced no problem or obstacles. Doesn't he have friends? Even
then his vow is intact.
Do not feel that 'Swami is binding me.' This is for your good. Your benefit.
This is not meant as a burden. We feel burdened by parents, teachers and
become bored. But do we ever become bored of eating? If we realize God's
greatness, we will easily remain within the vows.
Milind: When you and the sadhus are here we enthusiastically make
promises, but later are unable to keep them.

within your vows that you inspire others... and even if we return after five
years we would realize that these youngsters are are of firm mind.
Never become depressed. If you happen to lapse, stand up and begin again.
Never remain down if you fall. It is only those who climb mountains that
fall... but those who determine to get to the top do so, no matter what
setbacks they experience.
The youths sang the prayer. "Mahabalvant maya tamari...." The mood at once
became one of humble devotion to the guru. As each couplet was sung
tears welled up into the eyes of all. Sharp silence followed the prayer's
conclusion. The youths seemed lost in a world of their own, thinking back
over their past mistakes and repenting, afraid that they had disappointed
Swamishri and had lost his trust and confidence.
Again Milind began to speak. Words failed as he choked tearfully, "Swami,
we've lost all hope, we're defeated."
"No, you have not lost," said Swamishri gently. You have met Maharaj. Met
Swami. Do not be afraid or confused... they are with us constantly."
"All we desire is your pleasure."
"You have our pleasure. The Pandavs drew strength from Shri Krishna and
so they ultimately won. We should draw strength from God also. Never lose
courage. Remember God."

વામી ીએ ભંડાર ને ન ક બોલાવીને આશીવાદ આપતાં ક ું : ‘બસ, આ ર તે જ ેમથી
સૌને જમાડતા રહજો. શાંિતથી, ધીરજ ુ ા યા વગર કાયકરો સાથે પણ
મ ેમથી કામ લઈને
એ ું કામ કર ું ક થી બધા રા રહ અને ઉ સાહથી સેવા કર.’

forever possess a divine form and to be the 'avatãri', the cause of all of the
avatãrs. If, however, one does not realise this, and instead realises God to
be formless or like the other avatãrs, then that is regarded as committing
blasphemy against God."
