Lab Experiment 4

This document describes experiments to verify voltage and current divider rules for DC circuits. The voltage divider experiment connects resistors in a series circuit to a power supply and measures voltages across each resistor. Calculated voltages are compared to measured values. The current divider experiment similarly connects resistors in parallel and compares calculated and measured currents through each resistor. Both experiments aim to experimentally validate the theoretical rules for voltage and current division in circuits.

a) Verification of Voltage Divider Rule for DC Circuits

Objective:To verify the Voltage Divider Rule for DC Circuits.

Apparatus:
 DC Power Supply
 Resistors
 connecting wires
 Breadboard
 Multimeter (DMM)
Theory:
In electronics, a voltage divider (also known as a potential divider) is a simple linear circuit that
produces an output voltage (Vout) that is a fraction of its input voltage (Vin). Voltage division
refers to the partitioning of a voltage among the components of the divider.

Applying Ohm's Law, the relationship between the input voltage, Vin, and the output voltage,
Vout, can be found

For any series circuit generalized voltage divider is given by the formula

Procedure:

Figure-1
Connect the circuit according to circuit diagram as shown in figure-2. Set the DC power supply
from 0 to 5V in increments of 1V step. Measure the voltage across R1, R2, R3 andR4 by DMM.
Calculate the voltage across each resistor by applying voltage divider rule for each value of DC
supply. Record the readings in Table-1.

Observations and Calculations:

R1=_______ KΩ, R2=__________ KΩ R3=___________ KΩ

b) Verification of Current Divider Rule for DC Circuits

Objective:To verify the Current Divider Rule for DC Circuits.

Apparatus:
 DC Power Supply
 Resistors
 connecting wires
 Breadboard
 Multimeter (DMM)
Theory:
In electronics, a current divider is a simple linear circuit that produces an output current (IX) that
is a fraction of its input current (IT). Current division refers to the splitting of current between the
branches of the divider. The currents in the various branches of such a circuit will always divide
in such a way as to minimize the total energy expended.
