We Are of History. We Are by History.: Not Makers Made

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated "We are not MAKERS of HISTORY. We are MADE by HISTORY." This famous quote means that people are shaped by the historical events and circumstances of their time rather than shaping history themselves. However, in context, King was actually encouraging people to rise up and make history themselves rather than just going along with the status quo.

We are not MAKERS of HISTORY.

We are MADE by HISTORY.

-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This quotation of King Jr. He told this quote in his congregation in 1954. This declaration went
on to become one of his best known lines. As I learned in the past discussion this quotation fits
the number two reason which is “History helps us understand change and how we live in came to
be. It looks like, Dr. King Jr. saying that the people shaped by the world around them, we are
who we are because of the history we lived in, that we can change that. But if you look at the
context from the entire speech, he really manifests the opposite idea of that line. He axiom that
we people are so overreact trying to fit in and sustain the world that we don’t try to make
history, that we just go along with it. He’s encouraging people not to follow or obey to the way
things are. He’s trying to tell them/us that we need to rise up and make history in our own ways.
And don’t allow the rest of the world decide on how we going to live our life. Disclaimer. The
post is intended for educational purposes only.
