Threaded Fasteners Guide

This document provides information about threaded fasteners and thread standards. It defines key thread terminology like thread, pitch, and lead. It discusses how to represent threads graphically and manufacture internal and external threads. Common thread forms are shown as well as how to draw threads. Details are given on American Unified and metric thread standards including data, formulas for dimensions, and an example calculation. Drill size formulas are also included. Exercises are provided to reinforce the concepts.

Basic definitions 2

Thread:
A ridge of uniform
section in the form of
a helix on the external
or internal surface of a
cylinder.
Pitch:
Distance from crest to
crest or root to root, or
from a point on the
thread form to the
corresponding point
on the next form,
measured parallel to
the axis.
Lead:
The distance that the
threaded part will
move parallel to the
axis during one
rotation.

Manufacturing an external thread (Using a lathe) 14

The part rotates continuously and the threading tool moves parallel to
the rotation axis at a constant linear speed.
The tool penetrates the part a little bit more (toward de rotation axis)
in each pass.
This process repeats until the full depth of thread is obtained.

American thread data 22

A B C D E

A = Nominal diameter.
B = Threads per inch.
C = Unified National Coarse,
National Fine,
National ExtraFine,
National Special
D = Tolerance.
1 = Loose fit tolerance.
2 = Medium tolerance.
3 = Tight tolerance.
E = A means an external thread.
B means an internal thread.
= RH o LH (right or left hand)
= Single, Double or Triple
= Threading depth or thread
length.

American thread formulas 23

P = pitch = 1/threads per inch

D = Thread depth = 0.6495*pitch
F = Face width (root or crest) = 0.125*pitch
Example:
1.000-8NC-2A
Pitch = 1/8 = 0.125 plg.
Thread depth = 0.6495*pitch = 0.081 plg.
Minor diameter = 1 - (2*0.081) = 0.838 plg.

Metric thread data 25

A = Metric
B = Nominal diameter (mm.)
C = Thread pitch.
D = Tolerance grade:
3 to 5 fine, 7 a 9 coarse
6 most used.

E = Right Hand or Left Hand (RH o LH)

F = Threading depth or thread length.

Elaboró: Víctor Romero

Metric thread formulas 26

P = pitch (mm.)
D = Thread depth = 0.6134 x pitch
FC = Crest face width = 0.125*pitch
FR = Root face width = 0.25*pitch
Example:
M14x2
Thread depth = 0.6134 x 2 = 1.226 mm
Minor diameter = 14-(1.226*2)= 11.54 mm
Crest face width = 0.125*2 = 0.25 mm
Root face width = 0.25*2 = 0.5 mm
