CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

According to the research team in United States the cellular phone is a new
technological tool that is accessible and attractive to the younger generation and in the
recent years, the number of citizens that uses cellular had increased. Using this
technological tool was abused and users got an addictive behavior. It is also one of the
challenges that educational institution faces.

Cellular phones especially smart phones are being used increasingly over recent
years in both developed and developing countries. Despite that it offers a great
convenience; it can exert negative influence in one’s extreme emotional changes and
even cause serious psychological reactions, giving rise to the phenomenon popularly
known as “cellular phone addiction”.

The usage of cellular phone during class hour distract the attention of students and
will not be able to actively participate in class activities because their attention was
diverted in surfing the internet by cheeking their social media account and playing online
mobile games.

In this study, the researchers will identify the disadvantages of using cellular to
the academic performance of selected grade 11 students of St. Michael Institute. The
importance of this study is to raise awareness especially to all the students of SMI
regarding the disadvantages of too much use of mobile phone and for the School
Management to improve the implementation of rules and regulation in the use of mobile
phones in the school.

Background of the Study

The cellular phone has been one of the quickest and accessible technological tool
throughout the world. Mobile Devices can be used to integrate interactive classroom
learning. It has the ability to record and save data, access information and create podcast
according to Chartrand, 2007. Also, it can be used to gather data for classroom
presentation and enhance interactivity and in large classroom settings (Scomavacca, Huff,
and Marshall 2009), and serving as an alternative to “clickers” used in personal response
systems (Pellowe et al., 2014). It also replaces traditional tools such as dictionaries,
timers, and digital cameras.

According to Gutierrez, Rodrigues & Rubio 2016 about their study in cellphone
abuse, there is a concensus about the existence of cell-phone addiction, but the
delimitation and criteria used by various researchers vary. Cell-phone addiction shows a
distinct user profile that differentiates it from internet addiction. Without evidence
pointing to the influence of cultural level and socioeconomic status, the pattern of abuse
is greatest among young people, primarily females. Intercultural and geographical
diffrences have not been sufficiently studied. The problematic use of cell phones has been
associated with personality variables, such as extraversion, neuroticism, self-esteem,
impulsivity, self-identity, and self-image. Similarly, sleep disturbance, anxiety, strees,
and, to a lesser extent, depression, which are also associated with internet abuse, have
been associated with problematic cell-phone use. In addition, the present review reveals
the coexistence relationship between problematic cell-phone use and substance use such
as tobacco and alcohol.

In the DepEd Order No. 70 s. 1999 and DepEd Order No. 83, s. 2003 stated that
the use of cellphones diverted the attention of students from their studies. Moreover,
reports shows that text messaging and phone calls caused disturbance to the class and
being used to cheat during examination. As response to this issue, school officials are
directed to ensure that texting messages during class hour and within the school’s vicinity
should be stopped and closely monitored and regulated.

A marketing research conducted by Berico et al. (2008) in Davao City, showed

that the preference towards features of mobile phones by consumers is high with a grand
mean of 4.85.Among the features mentioned are high-quality built-in camera lenses,
music player, and web connections, these are some of the most advanced features offered
by mobile phone makers during those times. The study also showed that consumers
preferred mobile phones which are very portable and comfortable. This is evident in the
handsets that the market has today. Observations revealed that as the variety of mobile
phones emerged the growing popularity of the local brands such as Cherry Mobile and
Myphone has also captured the Davao residents’ liking for their preference of mobile
brand.

Statement of the problem

The research study is focused on the abusing of the use of cellular phones and the
disadvantages in academic performance of grade 11 students of St. Michael Institute.

Specifically, the research sought to answer the following question:

1. Profile of the respondent

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Strand

2. What are the disadvantages of using too much cellular phones?

3. How does using too much of cellular phones affects the academic performance
of the students?

Significance of the study

This study will be significant endeavor to the following personel:

 Students: To be aware in abusing the use of cellular phones.

 Teachers: Have an additional knowledge regarding to this topic.
 Parents: For them to monitor well their children.
 School Administration: For them to create a policy regarding this matter.

Scopes and Delimination

This study is conducted from January 2020 until __________. It includes the
participation of selected Grade 11 students: 15 students each strands. Other year level is
not included to the respondents. It will only focus in the disadvantages of using too much
cellular phones in the academic performances. This study is under the quantitative
research design and the sampling technique is Simple Random Probability Sampling.
