This document provides information about the different brake systems on a crane, including the service brake, parking brake, exhaust brake, retarder, and eddy current brake. The service brake is used for normal driving and acts on all wheels. The parking brake can also be used as an emergency brake and acts on all wheels when first applied but loses the front axle after time. The exhaust brake and retarder serve as sustained-action brakes, with the retarder having multiple settings and requiring a high engine speed to be effective. The document provides instructions for the proper use of each brake type.

8.1 Service Brake

The service brake is used for normal driving purposes. The dual--
circuit braking system acts on all wheels.

To brake the crane, gently press pedal (15) of the brake valve.

A twin pressure gauge and an indicator light for monitoring pur-

poses are found on the dash board.

Twin pressure gauge

The twin pressure gauge (59) displays the emergency pressure

supply in the two braking systems.

If this pressure is less than 7 bar, the air tanks of the braking sys-
tem must be topped up (see also Section 6.1).

Indicator light

If indicator light (57) comes on, the pressure in the braking sys-
tem has dropped below 5 bar.

-- In the event of faults in the braking system, the crane

must be stopped immediately and the cause of the fault
ascertained.
The crane may be driven only in an extreme emergency,
at low speed, to the next repair shop.
-- Never use the service brake as an extra sustained--action
brake. Danger of fading!
-- The service brake is in line with legal regulations only up
to an axle load of 12 t
(EC rule 71/320/EWG).

8.2 Parking Brake

The parking brake (hand brake) is used when parking the crane,
and may also be used as an emergency brake in the event of fail-
ure of the service brake. The parking brake is released by means
of compressed air and applied by means of springs integrated
into the brake cylinders of axles 3 to 6.
In addition, when the parking brake is applied, the brake cylinders
of axle 1 are supplied with compressed air. As a result, the park-
ing brake acts on axles 1 and 3 to 6.

Since the parking brake acts on all wheels, its braking power is
identical with the braking power of the service brake.

Since the parking brake does not act on all wheels, it is less
effective than the service brake.
After the crane has been stationary for a relatively long pe-
riod (pressure decrease in the braking system), the braking
effect of axle 1 is lost.
The parking brake continues to act only on axles 3 to 6.
Before the crane is lowered onto the wheels, make sure that
sufficient brake pressure is available. If necessary, run the
engine of the crane chassis and thus top up the air tank.
Check the brake pressure at the pressure gauge .

To apply the parking brake, move lever (11) of the hand brake
valve forwards and allow it to engage. To release the brake, over-
come the lever lock by pulling it out.
Indicator light (64) comes on when the parking brake is applied.

The parking brake will hold the crane on a maximum gradient of

25 % but not on the maximum gradient on which the crane can
be driven.

When parking on gradients, always use chocks.

When using the parking brake as an emergency brake, operate

lever (11) on the hand brake valve smoothly without jerking it. Do
not allow the lever to engage. The braking action is infinitely vari-
able, similar to that of the service brake.

Use only in emergencies and repair any faults in the service

brake immediately.

Under no circumstances must the crane be driven any

further if the braking system is faulty.

8.3 Sustained-- Action Brakes

The crane is equipped with two independent sustained--action

brakes.

The accelerator pedal must not be pressed whilst the sus-

tained--action brakes (exhaust brake and retarder) are ap-
plied.

8.3.1 Exhaust Brake

The exhaust brake should be used in particular on longer down-

grades. The exhaust brake is switched on by pressing the aera-
tion valve (16) with the left foot. The crane is then braked during
travel when in gear.

8.3.2 Retarder

The hydraulic retarder also serves as a sustained--action brake

on downgrades, and often makes use of the service brake or
downchanges unnecessary.
The retarder is switched on via lever (4).
Six different braking ranges (from min. to max.) can be accessed
with this lever.

The retarder comes in with a short time delay, depending on

the engine speed.

The effectiveness of the retarder depends on the engine

speed and the position of lever (4).
Before applying the retarder the engine speed must be as
high as possible (max. 2100 rpm). If necessary, increase the
engine speed by changing down.

The retarder is used as follows:

1. Return the drive pedal (14) to the idle position.

2. Using lever (4) select the desired braking range (1 to 6).

Indicator light (67) comes on.
The crane is braked.

Brakes 8

During down changes with the retarder in operation, the retarder

is switched off automatically until the clutch is re--engaged. By
this means, sudden jolts are prevented when the clutch is re--en-
gaged, and the gearchange clutch is preserved.

(Z 31 218)
When using the retarder to brake, especially on long down-
grades, the oil may heat up considerably, causing the oil temper-
ature limit (150° C, red area) to be exceeded.
Warning buzzer (66) sounds if the oil temperature rises above
150° C .
While operating the retarder therefore always keep an eye on the
oil temperature display (55).

If the temperature display exceeds the permissible range

over 150° C, warning buzzer (66) sounds.
In this instance, change down a gear (the effectiveness of the
brakes will be increased due to the difference in gear ratio).

If this is not sufficient to bring the temperature back into the

permissible range, the retarder must be switched off.

After longer descents using the retarder braking power the

engine must only be switched off when the temperature dis-
play has reached the green area again.

If the converter oil temperature is too high indicator light (87)

also comes on.

The retarder can be supported by briefly actuating the ser-

vice brake, so that a speed can be reached (in the correct
gear) whereby the retarder can brake the crane indepen-
dently on the corresponding downgrade.
The service brake may be actuated for short periods only --
danger of fading.

8.3.3 Eddy Current Brake (Option)

(Z 24 789; Z 30 678)

The eddy current brake (Z 24 789) is designed for extended brak-

ing and serves to relieve the service brake. It can be used, for ex-
ample, to keep the mobile crane at a constant speed when driving
on long downgrades. It can also be used in tandem with the nor-
mal braking mechanics. To stop the crane completely, however,
the service brake must be applied.

The vehicle speed is decreased by touching on the step switch

(65), which comprises shift positions 1 to 4, and a neutral posi-
tion. Each shift position exerts a specific braking force .

Indicator light (68) on the instrument panel indicates when the

eddy current brake is engaged .

-- During braking, the step switch must be switched from

one shift position to the next, rather than passing through
the different positions in one stroke.
The step switch can be returned to the neutral position
with one stroke however.
-- With the crane at a standstill, the eddy current brake must
be switched off, otherwise the battery will go flat
