ACTIVITY #3
Blood Pressure and Heart Sound
1. What does Blood Pressure mean?
Blood pressure is the physical force exerted by the blood as it pushes against the
walls of the arteries. Blood pressure readings are written in two numbers
separated by a line: Systolic Pressure and Diastolic Pressure.
2. What do systolic and diastolic pressure signify?
The blood pressure is recorded in two numbers:
o Systolic blood pressure (the first number) – indicates how much
pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls when the heart
beats.
o Diastolic blood pressure (the second number) – indicates how much
pressure your blood is exerting against your artery walls while the heart
is resting between beats.
3. What correspond to Lub and Dub sound in the heart?
The two major sounds heard in the normal heart sound like “Lub Dub”.
o The “Lub” is the first heart sound, commonly termed S1, and is
caused by turbulence caused by the closure of Mitral and Tricuspid
Valves at the start of systole and at the same time the Pulmonary
and Aortic Valves just opened.
o The “Dub” is the second heart sound, commonly termed S2 is caused
by the closure of Aortic and Pulmonary Valves, marking the end of
systole and the same time the Mitral and Tricuspid Valves just
opened.
Thus, the time period elapsing between the first heart sound and second
sound defines systole (ventricular ejection) and the time between the
second sound and the following first sound defines diastole (ventricular
filling).
