1.3 PROJECT INVOLVEMENTS
I was assigned my first small project was to help develop a manual calculation for
Pengerang Deepwater Terminal 2 at Pengerang, Johor Darul Ta’zim for foundation layout.
This task was very similar to what I studied and achieved will doing the course Estimating
& Contract in university as I basically calculated all the elements required to be calculated
using the manual calculation method and data and information was written down on the
Design sheet provided by the company. I basically calculated and obtain the values for each
element that was present in the BQ and all information was to be derived from the drawings
from the temple design. Elements such as lean concrete, hardcore, concrete work, steel
reinforcement, ties backfilling, formwork and excavation. All the manual calculation that
completed was sent to my supervisor for cross checking to avoid any errors or mistakes to
happen.
After completing the manual calculation and compiling it and sending it to draftsman, my
supervisor assigned me the next task of learning and understanding of the StaadPro
Software. I was assigned to master the software and understand how to use it and to model
specific projects into 3D models. I used the reference manual book which is provided by
my company and in addition to that I used the Internet services like YouTube and Google
to enable me to fasten the learning process. The project that was completed by me using the
StaadPro Software such as Linde & Client Site Office, TNB Guard House, Smoking
Shelter, Resting Meal Shelter and EESB Site Office.
The next task that was assigned to me was to model a Intermediate Unit of Type A House
(32’ x 70’) for Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam. The house was modeled in the new software
called Orion 18. I was assigned to learn the software in advance to enable myself to
complete the modeling process of the house as fast as possible. I used the reference manual
book which is provided by my company and in addition to that I used the Internet services
like YouTube and Google to enable me to fasten the learning process.
2
My following task would be a small assignment handed to me by my supervisor for an
ongoing project, the Western Digital Malaysia Misc Structure. By using the StaadPro
Software, I was assigned to design an unistrut steel frame. I have to check the sizing of the
steel unistrut is capable enough to cater the load given. In addition I have to redesign a new
sizing of steel as an addition support for my design output which is produced by StaadPro
Software. The StaadPro software was to determine whether the section is safe to use or will
require new casting and reinforcement.
The next task assigned to me was to design a pile cap for WCE S5 BR Foundation Project
using the given axial load by geotechnical department. The project was modeled in
StaadPro to determine the bending and shear checking of the pile cap. All the plate sizing,
plate thickness and dimension of the plate were assigned clearly. At the end, the
spreadsheet for the particular pile have to be produced and submitted to my supervisor for
checking.
My next task that was assigned to me was to complete a report with a title of ‘Cadangan
Membina “ Air Separation Unit” Dan Lain-Lain Kemudahan di atas PTD 5319 (PLOT
137), Projek Bersepadu Loji Penapisan Minyak dan Perokimia (Rapid) , Mukim
Pengerang,Daerah Kota Tinggi, JB.It consist of all the buiding details, total area of the
buiding, effect of the comstruction, total payment, timetable of the construction and
pictures.
After that, I was assigned to produce a complete spreadsheet for Pusat Pentadbiran Sultan
Ahmad Shah. The spreadsheet consists of 8 pile design with 2 StaadPro design. It consist of
column dimension, pile diameter, pile capacity, pile cap dimension and pile cap thickness
which is the most important thing in the spreadsheet design. At the end, the spreadsheet for
the particular pile have to be produced an d submitted to my supervisor for checking.

CHAPTER III
TASK SPECIFICATION SUMMARY
3.1 TASK DESCRIPTION
During my 13 weeks training in GCU Consultants (C & S) office, my supervisor Mr.Ir.S
Vijayakumar assigned me various tasks to ensure that I was exposed to real working
environment. These exposures will prepare me with necessary skills for future’s
undertaking. Table 1 summarized task description assigned by my supervisor.
14
3.2 TASK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND HOW IT WAS SOLVED
The problem that I face during my first task was about the Pengerang Deepwater Terminal
Phase 2 where I was appointed to complete a manual calculation about the foundation
layout. Some off the components that was composed down was not clear and would be hard
to appreciate or figure. So to overcome this situation I try to have a discussion with my
supervisor for more clarification.
Another problem that arise was when I was designing the EESB SITE OFFICE/Linde Site
Office. I struggled to assign the deal load, live load and wind load on x and y direction. I
seek for guidance from my supervisor for assigning combination load. The deflection
diagram was not clear due to the error in the values. In this case I get some advice from the
Architect who designs the drawing for proper changes.
During my learning process of the Staad.Pro Software, I was assigned to design a pile cap
design for bridges using the particular software for more understanding. In this case, I faced
so much of problem in assigning the correct plate size and thickness. Even the type of
loading was different and various. The problem was solved after multiple discussions with
my supervisor and extensive search regarding the topic on the internet.
Furthermore, I was assigned to complete a report with title “Cadangan Membina ‘Air
Separation Units’ for submission to the client. In this task I was struggling to get the
standard format that provided by the company for report writing. The area of the building
was calculated using AutoCAD. Some off the elements that was written down was not clear
and would be difficult to comprehend or calculate. In order to solve the problem, I
contacted the Architect of the project and arranged for a meeting to clear up on certain
ideas and elements that were uncertain.
15
After assigning the job with my supervisor in PPSAS Kuantan project, I was more to
technical calculation and pile design in spreadsheet for a change. All the work was done
using the spreadsheet to get the exact reinforcement that needed to the pile. I t was designed
in different diameter due to the location and the condition of the soil which is given by the
GCU Geotechnical department. The project was on hold due to the unclear information that
given by the quantity surveyor. In the case, I contacted my supervisor and arranged for a
meeting to clear up on certain ideas and elements that were uncertain.

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 CONCLUSION
After three months of intensive training , I felt so thankful so being part of GCU C&S
Consultants.
After three months of work, I could not have been happier to have chosen GCU C&S
Consultants as I have learned so much about the industry and how a workplace operates on
a daily basis. The knowledge I have learnt from university was helpful and it helped me
prepare for my dream of being an Engineer. The task that I was assigned was related to
what I have learnt before and I was happy that I could apply the knowledge that I have
learnt before. My supervisor, IR Vijay helped me wherever he could and gave me multiple
task that were interrelated and it was always given as a preparation for the next task. His
understanding of our field was amazing and his insights on how things should be was also a
great advice for future use. My co-workers in the Structure Department was always very
helpful and were always willing to help me at any time. GCU is a wonderful choice for me
and I would most likely return after my studies has been completed.
17
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
The recommendations I have for the university is that students should definitely come and
have their Industrial Training here because of the exposure that they can obtain and they
knowledge they can obtain from being under Mr. Vijay. I can say that what I have learnt
here can surely help me when I return to university to complete my studies and can most
probably help me when I do Capstone Design Project. As for how the University can
prepare the students for Industrial Training, we students should be given more design
projects and better use of the software’s provided to help us master these software’s before
going into work. Overall, my whole experience was a valuable and interesting experience
and I can wait to work full time in the Future.
GCU C&S has been wonderful in receiving me and the whole company has treated me with
equal respect and friendliness. I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity and I am
grateful for the chance to work in this company. My recommendations for the company is
maybe introducing flexible timing where the staff can choose the time they arrive and
leave. Another recommendation could be that the company can choose whether to give
Friday afternoon or Monday morning off as this can help productivity as both this periods
normally is where staff productivity is the lowest.
Thank you.
