St. Paul University at San Miguel: Title Proposal

The document proposes integrating virtual learning and environmental science into a Grade 12 physics class. The student, Romnick G. Inducil, asks how this integration would affect student learning in physics. Their goals are to determine factors influencing virtual learning and enhance environmental stewardship through physics. Related literature discusses social constructivism in online environments, the changing role of experts and credible sources with new media, and how forethought allows people to choose actions. The research adviser has not yet approved or requested revisions to the proposal.

Title Proposal

Student Name: Romnick G. Inducil

1. Proposed Title/Topic:
INTEGRATION of VIRTUAL LEARNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE IN
Grade 12 PHYSICS

2. My Core Question: (Based on your interests, clearly stated as a question, open-ended and
exploratory, related to real-world issues whenever possible, and directed toward a
path to knowledge.)

How virtual learning and environmental science integration affects the learning of students in
Physics?

3. My Goal(s) for this Research:

o Determine the factors that may affect the learning of students in physics through
virtual learning environment.
o Enhance environmental stewardship through Physics

Related Literature:

Social constructivist learning environments create opportunities for students to develop

meaning by dialoguing, discussing, and debating with other learners. This social interaction
creates meaning from current and prior knowledge, thus deepening understanding and extending
knowledge for the students. The learning activities are authentic. Learners are actively involved
in constructing knowledge of a topic using communication and social interactions with peers
(Conole, Dyke, Oliver, & Seale, 2004; Neo, 2008; Siemens, 2004; Snyder, 2009).

Dede (2008) discusses the changing epistemology of online interactions with the advent
of Web 2.0 tools. These tools have changed learning from one right answer, which traditionally
comes from experts via textbooks, to the creations by and interactions of learners using Web 2.0
tools like Wikipedias. This new media requires teaching learners how to be smart consumers
who, for example, can discern whether the information is from a credible or non-credible
resource. This shift of learning from traditional materials to using Web 2.0 tools should cause
teachers to rethink how they deliver content, and to seek ways to incorporate the tools students
use for recreation to further their interest and education. In a perfect world, educators would be
able to take the best from traditional and online formats to create a superior system for building
understanding and knowledge (Dede, 2008)

People don’t model or copy every social influence they encounter; they determine which
course of action to take through self-reflection. Inner thoughts are key aspects of learning and
socializing; they are what make people human. “The core features of personal agency address the
issue of what it means to be human” (Bandura, 2001, p. 6). A major personal agency of the social
cognitive theory is forethought.  “Through the exercise of forethought, peoplemotivate
themselves and guide their actions in anticipation of future events. When projected over a long
time course on matters of value, a forethoughtful perspective provides direction, coherence, and
meaning to one's life” (Bandura, 2001, p. 7). Forethought allows people to choose their course of
action.

People anticipate the likely consequences of their prospective actions, they set goals for
themselves, and they otherwise plan courses of action thatare likely to produce desired
outcomes. Through exercise of forethought, people motivate themselves and guide their
actions anticipatorily. (Bandura, 1989, p. 39)
