Dear Mr. Kilmer

The story is about a boy named Richard who begins corresponding with the poet Mr. Kilmer after hearing one of his poems. They become friends and Mr. Kilmer advises Richard to stay true to himself and not fear ridicule. However, when the war begins, conflicts arise as Richard's town is vandalized and his friend Hannah is bullied. Richard declines participating in a patriotic program, upsetting his father. Richard is later devastated to hear of Mr. Kilmer's death in battle. He writes a poem to express his sadness which is published in the local paper.
