Preliminary Task: Script

The preliminary task involves filming a character opening a door, crossing a room, sitting down and having a brief conversation. The scene will be filmed in a classroom with one student talking to a teacher. Various shots will be used like close-ups of the door handle and mid/long shots of characters walking and talking to demonstrate cinematography techniques like the 180 degree rule. The group filmed and edited the scene, adding voiceovers and music, and will record additional sound effects in the next lesson.

Preliminary Task

Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a
room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then
exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action,
shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Our idea for the task is a scene in school where a student walks into a classroom and has a
conversation with one of the teachers or someone else in our group, either about school work
(for the teacher) or gossip (for the other person in our group). The camera will show them
walking into a classroom through a door, with a close up of them reaching for the door handle
and turn it. Then a mid shot of them walking through the door and walking over to the other
person who is sat down, plus a long shot from over the person who has walked through the

Script
Person 1 walks towards to the door and reaches to the door handle. Person walks 1
towards to desk and pulls back chair and sits on it,

Person 2: I’ve been expecting you

Person 1: (nod)

Person 2: Here it is, now do it and don’t come back until you have completed the task
(pushes piece of paper towards person 1 )

Person 1: Is all the information on the paper?

Person 2: Yes

Person 1: Are you sure this makes 20 cookies? (picks up paper and walks to the door
and walks out)

Kacey Semmens will play Person 1 and Matt Batchelor will play Person 2.

door showing the other person (teacher or other person in our group) sat down. The person
who came through the door will sit down and we will use a series of over the shoulder shots
during the conversation of a few lines, to indicate that it is a conversation and for the viewer
to believe that they are there and to give a point of view. We will remember the 180 degree
rule when doing this.
Story Board

On Thursday 2nd December we filmed the preliminary task in our Media Studies room, we
took into account the 180 rule, shot reverse shot, variety of shots and over the shoulder shot.
We also loaded the filming up onto the Macs. I think that we worked really well that lesson
as we filmed efficiently and we worked together well as a group. Next Lesson we hope to
start the editing and voice over.

Monday 6th December we edited the clips and recorded some of the voice overs. For the
voice overs Dan voiced Kacey’s part and SInead Linaker voiced Matt’s parts, we did this to
add quirkiness and general reversal. Again I think that we worked really well as a group but
we didn’t get the recordings of the footsteps, door handle and scraping the chair which next
lesson we hope to get finished and also add some music onto the background.

Monday 6th December Period 5- today we found music for our Preliminary task which works
really well. I worked on my blog but improving sections. By next lesson I will either take a
picture of the storyboard to put on my blog or scan it in. Next Lesson as a group we will do
recordings of footsteps, door handle and scraping of a chair. Then after we will assess our
tasks and evaluate them then have a meeting about our main task.
