Read the given passage carefully, and answer the Question after the each passage.

Passage-1
The f-block elements are known as inner transition elements because they involve the filling for inner sub-shells (4f or
5f). Because lanthanum closely resembles the lanthanoids, it isusually included in any discussion of the lanthanoids.

However, the shielding of one 4 f electron by another is less than one d electron by another with the increase in nuclear
charge along the series. There is fairly regular decrease in the sizes with increasing atomic number. The Continuous
decrease in radii is known as Lanthanides Contraction. Lathanides exhibit the oxidation state of +3. Some of them also
exhibit the oxidation state of +2 and +4. Many of the lanthanides ions are coloured in solid state as well as in solutions.
The colour is due to the f-f transition since they have partly filled f-orbitals.
Q11. The general electronic configuration of outermost shell of f-block elements is
(a) (n-2)f1-14(n-1)d0-1ns2 (b) (n-1)f1-14(n-1)d1-2ns1-2

(c) (n-2)f1-14nd1-2ns1-2 (d) None of these

(a) Yb2+ (b) Sm2+ (c) Pm3+ (d) Ce4+

Passage-2
Potassium dichromate is a very important chemical used in leather industry and as an oxidant for preparation of many
azo compounds. The chromates and dichromates are interconvertible in aqueous solution depending upon pH of the
solution.
Cr2O72 + 2OH  CrO42 + H2O
Orange Yellow
In acidic solution, its oxidising action can be represented as follows:
Cr2O72 + 14H+ + 6e  2Cr3+ + 7H2O (EV = 1.33V)

(a) 4 Cr-O bonds are equivalent (b) 6 Cr-O bonds are equivalent
(c)All Cr-O bonds are equivalent (d) All Cr-O bonds are non-equivalent.

(a) Zero (b) +7 (c) +3 (d) +6

Passage-3
Potassium permanganate is prepared by fusion of MnO2 with an alkali metal hydroxide and an oxidising agent like
KNO3. This produces the dark green K2MnO4 which disproportionates in a neutral or acidic solution to give
permanganate.
2MnO2+ 4KOH + O2  2K2MnO4 + 2H2O
Black Green
3MnO42– + 4H+ → 2MnO4– + MnO2 + 2H2O
Green Purple
KMnO4 act as very good oxidizing agent in different medium as
MnO4– + OH +e– → MnO42–
