Lesson.4. Singular and Plural

1. A noun is singular if it refers the one thing.


Ex. book, dog, pen, flower.

2. A noun is plural if it refers to more than one


thing.
Ex. Books, dogs, pens, flowers.
# Formation of plural.
1. by adding s to the word.
Ex. Apple ---- apples.
Boy ---- boys.
Cap ----- caps.

2. by adding es to the word.


If the word ends with s, o, x, ch, sh then we add
es to make plural.
Ex. Ass ---- asses.
Mango ---- mangoes.
Box ---- boxes.
Bench ----- benches.
Dish ----- dishes.
3. a. by adding ies to the word.
If a word ends with y and before y consonant is
there, then remove y and add ies.
Ex. Fly ---- flies.
City ---- cities.
b. If the word ends with y and before y vowel is
there then only s is added.
Ex. Boy ---- boys.
Toy ---- toys.

4. by adding ves to the word.


When a word end with f or fe then we remove f
or fe and add ves.
Ex. Leaf ----- leaves.
Calf ------ calves.
5. Irregular plurals.
Child ----- children.
Ox ---- oxen.
Man ---- men.
Woman ------ women.
Mouse ---- mice.
Foot ---- feet.
Goose ---- geese.
Tooth ---- teeth.
