Kanbalar Mitts Pattern

by Emily Walton for

www.ExpressionFiberArts.com

These easy fingerless mitts will keep your hands warm this winter, while
leaving your fingers free to drive, type or text. Don't panic at the
reverse stockinette stitch! These are knit in stockinette stitch, then
turned inside out before the thumb is finished, keeping your purling to a
minimum! You can keep that a secret, though, when your friends ooh
and ahh over your mitts. We won't tell!

MITT SIZE: One size, approximately 7.25" long and 7.5" circumference
unstretched. Length is adjustable by adding or subtracting pattern or
ribbing repeats.
MATERIALS: 1 skein (113 g, 395 yards) Expression Fiber Arts Luster
Superwash Merino Tencel Sport yarn in colorway Belgian Chocolate
Shavings. If that colorway isn't available, any shades from this category
will work.
NEEDLES: US Size 5 (3.75 mm) 9" circular needles (or 32" or longer for Magic Loop) and/or DPNs.
OTHER TOOLS: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers, waste yarn or stitch holder.
GAUGE: 22 sts/32 rnds=4" in Stockinette stitch, knit in the round with yarn held double and blocked.
ABBREVIATIONS: K: Knit, P: Purl, CO: Cast on, BO: Bind off, St(s): Stitch(es), PM: Place marker, Rep: Repeat,
Rnd: Round, RLI: Right Lifted Increase, LLI: Left Lifted Increase
NOTES: Yarn is held double throughout.
-To work the RLI, insert the right needle into the front of the stitch below the stitch on the left needle and pull
it onto the left needle. Knit this stitch through the front as you would a normal knit stitch. 1 stitch increased.
-To work the LLI, insert the left needle into the back of the stitch that is now 2 stitches below the stitch on
the right needle and pull it onto the left needle. Knit this stitch through the back loop. 1 stitch increased.

LET’S BEGIN!
CO 44 sts. PM and join to work in the rnd.
Work in (k1, p1) rib for 15 rnds.
Knit 8 rnds even.

Gusset setup:
Rnd 1: RLI, k1, p1, LLI, pm, k to end of rnd. You now have 4 sts between your gusset markers (the beginning
of round marker is doubling as a gusset marker).
Rnd 2: (P1, k1) twice, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: RLI, (p1, k1) twice, LLI, k to end of rnd. 6 sts between gusset markers.
Rnd 4: (K1, p1) 3 times, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: RLI, (k1, p1) 3 times, LLI, k to end of rnd. 8 sts between gusset markers.
Rnd 6: (P1, k1) 4 times, k to end of rnd.
Continue in this fashion, increasing every other rnd, until you have 20 sts between the gusset markers, ending
after an even rnd. You will work all new sts into the rib pattern as established.

Next rnd: Place 20 gusset sts on waste yarn or a holder for later, removing the second gusset marker. CO 2
sts using the backward loop method and knit to the end of the rnd. (44 sts)
K 7 more rnds even.
Work in (k1, p1) rib for 5 rnds.
BO all sts in pattern.
Turn mitt inside out before working thumb. The purl/reverse stockinette side is now on the outside.

Thumb:
Place 20 thumb sts on DPNs and join new yarn, leaving a long tail for later.
Work in (k1, p1) rib for 5 rnds.
BO all sts in pattern.
Using the long tail, sew or cinch the hole between the thumb and hand. Weave in all ends with a tapestry
needle.

Make a second mitt identical to the first.

FINISHING: Block mitts by soaking in lukewarm water or spray misting, and pin into place to open the rib
sections. Enjoy!
