COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ADOOR
M.Tech II Semester First Internal Examination
03ME 6022 Design of Heat Transfer Equipments
Time: 1Hr Marks: 20
1. Consider two double pipe counterflow heat exchangers that are identical except that one is twice
as long as the other one. Which of the exchangers is more likely to have a higher effectiveness?
(2marks)
2. What is the limitation of the LMTD Method? How is effectiveness-NTU method superior to
correction factor-LMTD method? (2marks)
3. Derive LMTD equation for a Parallel flow Heat Exchanger. (6marks)
4. In a double –pipe counter flow heat exchanger the inner tube has a diameter of 20 mm and very
little thickness. The inner diameter of the tube is 30 mm. Water flows through the inner tube at a
rate of 0.5 kg/s, and oil flows through the shell at a rate of 0.8 kg/s. Take the average temperature
of the water and the oil as 47°C and 80°C, respectively and assume fully developed flow.
Determine the overall heat transfer coefficient. Given water at 47°C, ρ = 989 kg/m 3, k = 0.637
W/mK, ν = 0.59 x 10-6 m2/s and Pr = 3.79. For oil at 80°C, ρ = 852 kg/m3, k = 0.138 W/mK, ν =
37.5 x 10-6 m2/s and Pr = 490. (10 marks)
