INDUCTION MACHINES
Total Marks:70

1. (a) Explain the principle and operation of three phase induction motor. [5M]
(b) Mention the types, advantages, and disadvantages of induction motor.
(b) Derive the relation for starting (Ts) and prove that Ts is maximum when R2 = X2.
(i.e. when rotor resistance/phase is equal to standstill rotor reactance/phase.)

2. A 4-pole, 3-phase IM operates from a supply whose frequency is 50 Hz. Calculate:

[5M]
a) Speed at which the magnetic field of the stator is rotating
b) Speed of the rotor when the slip is 0.04.
c) Frequency of the rotor current when the slip is 0.03. In this case, how any complete
oscillations will the rotor voltage make per minute?
d) Frequency of the rotor current at standstill.

3. A 6-pole, 3-phase,50 Hz wound rotor IM when supplied at the rated voltage and
frequency with slip rings open-circuited, developed a voltage of 100 V between any
two rings. Under the same conditions, its rotor is now driven by external means at-
a) 1000 rpm opposite to the direction of rotation of stator field.
b) 1500 rpm in the direction of rotation of stator field.
Find the voltage available between slip rings and its frequency in each of these
cases.[2M]

4. A 6-pole, 3-phase, 400 V ,50 Hz IM takes a power input of 35 kW at its full-load

speed of 980 rpm. The total stator losses are 1 kW and friction and windage losses are
1.5 kW. Calculate: [5M]
a) Slip
b) Rotor Ohmic losses
c) Shaft Power
d) Shaft Torque
e) Efficiency

5. A 10 kW, 3-phase, 50 Hz, 4-pole IM has a full load slip of 0.03. Mechanical and stray
losses at full load are 3.5% of output power. Compute: [3M]
a) Power delivered by stator to rotor
b) Electromagnetic(internal) torque at full load
c) Rotor ohmic losses at full load.

6. A 400 V, 50 Hz, 6-pole, delta-connected, 3-phase IM consumes 45 kW with a line

current of 75A and runs at a slip of 3%. If stator iron loss is 1200W,windage and
friction loss is 900W and resistance between two stator terminals is 0.12Ω. Calculate:
[5M]
a) Power supplied to rotor
b) Rotor Copper loss
c) Power supplied to load
d) Efficiency
e) Shaft Torque developed

7. The maximum torque of a 3-phase IM occurs at a slip of 12%. The motor has an
equivalent secondary resistance of 0.08Ω/ph. Calculate the equivalent load resistance,
equivalent load voltage and current at this slip if gross power output is 9 kW. [5M]

8. A 3-phase, 200 hp, 3300 V, star-connected IM has the following equivalent circuit
parameters per phase:
R1=R2’=0.8Ω X1=X2’=3.5Ω
Calculate the slip at full load if friction and windage loss is 3 kW. [5M]

9. Draw the Torque- Slip Characteristics of 3-phase IM. Explain in detail how with the
variation of speed or slip, the motor operates in motoring, generating and braking
modes. [5M]

10. Explain the production of rotating magnetic field (RMF) in 3-phase and 2-phase
systems respectively and derive the resultant MMF produced in both the cases. [5M]

11. A 440 V, 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz slip ring, star-connected IM has a voltage of 80V
between slip rings when full voltage is applied to the stator and slip rings are open-
circuited with the rotor stationary. The stator current at no load is 2A at a pf of 0.2
lagging. The rotor is star-connected with a per phase standstill leakage impedance of
0.05+j0.25 referred to rotor. For the motor running with the slip rings short-circuited
at a slip of 5%. Calculate: [5M]
a) The torque developed
b) Mechanical power developed
c) Rotor Ohmic loss
d) Stator current and power factor.
Neglect stator leakage impedance and rotational losses

12. The following results were obtained on a 3-phase, 75 kW, 3.3 kV, 6-pole, 50 Hz
squirrel cage induction motor. [10M]
NL test: Rated frequency, 50 Hz V0 = 3.3 kV (line), I0 = 5 A, P0 = 2500 W
BR test: Frequency 15 Hz VBR = 400 V (line), IBR = 27 A, PBR = 15000 W
DC test on stator Resistance/phase = 3.75
