THE SMILING CULTURE

The Philippines is now on its technologically advancements and globalization, due of this fact
Filipino culture is now being divert with the help and assistance of popular culture. Some of the
practices in Filipino values was change into a casual way. In Philippine context, we have so
called Cultural Value. It is a value where difference became uniqueness. For example is the
value of being hospitable, in our country this is the reason why it contributes somehow in our
national identity. We are so welcome to other foreign whenever they visit our country. However,
there are also an instances that we brought our culture into a dirt dilemma. It turned out that
Filipino are always engage to whats new and what to be. We always say that we should preserve
our culture but the fact was we tend to patronize others product. Our culture define our identity
as a Filipino. We must be conscious enough of what really happening in our country. But how
we can be conscious and be aware if we do not know it’s strength and weaknesses. There is
always a fact that our culture will always be part of our cognitive development. As a Filipino
citizen, I’m gonna tell you my experiences of how I become productive in terms of culture as a
factor in owning myself.

I grow up in a land where kindness and respect was used as a foundation in developing the
character of one community that grow as a country. Where different culture joined and recognize
fundamental rights of every individual. It started when I try to involved in such different street
dancing festivals in my alma mater. Way back in high school life, I already exposed in festival
dances such as Ibalong festival, Magayon festival and other dances. That became an entrance to
know my purpose in life. In that way, we tend to promote our culture as a bicolano. That
experience also the reason why I had given an opportunity to perform in Cultural Center of the
Philippines in Pasay City last 2017 and 2018. I am so blessed to be awaken and be articulate
regarding on what we are as a Filipino netizen. Still I became humble in socializing and always
be happy over the thousand audiences there that time. Moreover, I’ve met also other performers
all the way from other regions as they also present what they have in their culture. In sudden I
notice that even though we came from different places there is something that we have the same
characteristic regardless of the dialect we used, our races and even geographical factor. It is
because we value our family ties as a filipino and also we all have the same purpose of why we
here in that event and that is to promote the Filipino Culture.

Furthermore, upon citing that memorable experience. It provides me an idea that downturn into
strengths and weaknesses of our culture. Our culture provide positivity in facing social issues.
We try to look for achievements brought by our culture instead of hardships and problems. It
also establish good connection or what we call intercultural communication. One may do
something not because of the activity but to spend time with other. Maybe the practices of
Filipino values are slowly turning off but the intention to respect is still there. I guess it is also
appropriate. We became sensitive and aware in others culture. However, due to the influx of
tourism, our culture in now being exploited. The game is now on us. We are all responsible in
this matter.

In sum, I should say that it takes dozens of years yet to inculcate effectively into the minds of our
people what is good and what is not to our country. The strength and weaknesses of our culture
and tradition cannot be contained in just a book or two, so much that we seem to embrace also
the culture, both the negative and the positives ones, of other nations. Let us value the art of this
culture. All we have to do is to possess Inter-cultural sensitivity in order to preserve Filipino
culture. This will lead us to into a right path. A path where we should belong.
