Inelastic Response Spectrum

The document describes a 2 degree of freedom structural model of a 2 storey RC building with lumped masses at each floor level. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure are provided. Students are asked to: 1) Determine maximum displacements and accelerations from the design spectrum for each natural frequency. 2) Calculate maximum floor displacements and inter-storey drift. 3) Determine base shear force and overturning moment. 4) Modify the design spectrum assuming a ductility ratio of 5 and recalculate earthquake response, commenting on results. 5) Redetermine maximum base shear and compare to previous value, stating conclusions.

Q3

A two storey single bay RC framed structure is idealised as a 2 degrees of freedom

system as shown in figure Q3a. The masses are assumed to be lumped at floor
levels. The cross section of the beams is much larger than the columns, so the
beams may be assumed to be rigid. The building is to be designed for horizontal
ground motion.

4. Modify the elastic design spectrum of Figure Q3b assuming a ductility ratio
μ=5, then determine the new earthquake response of the structure. Comment
