a. u = v b. u > v c. u < v d. none of these

divided by 4, 5, 6 and 7 leaves the same remainder 2 in each case?

a. 422 b. 842 c. 12723 d. none of these

4. A merchant buys 200 kg of rice at Rs 7.25 / kg and 400 kg at Rs 5.75 / kg. He mixes
and sells one third of the mixture at Rs 6 / kg. At what rate should he sell the
remaining mixture so that he may earn a profit of 20% on the whole ? (Rs / kg )

a. 8 b. 9.25 c. 6 d. 8.25

5. A man rows 5 km / hr in still water. Find the speed of river if it takes him 1 hour to
row to a place and back 2.4 km away.

a. 1 kmph b. 6 kmph c. 3 kmph d. 4 kmph

6. Two liquids are mixed in 3 : 2 proportion and the mixture is sold at Rs 11 / ltr at 10 %
profit. If the first liquid costs Rs 2 / ltr more than the second, the cost of first liquid is
( in Rs / ltr )

a. 10.8 b. 8.8 c. 18.8 d. 5

7. The value of a + b + c satisfying xyz = 1 if x1/a = y1/b = z1/c is

a. 0 b. -1 c. 1 d. 2
Solutions

1. 23 log (4 log 2 ± log 3 ±log 5) = 92 log 2 -23 log 3 -23 log 5

Similarly 17 (2 log 5 ± 3 log 2 ± log 3 ) = 34 log 5 ± 51 log 2 ± 17 log 3

And 10 ( 4 log 3 ± 4 log 2 ± log 5) = 40 log 3 ± 40 log 2 ± 10 log 5

Adding we get log 2 + log 5 = log 10 = 1

2. ½ (log u + log v) = ½ (log uv ) log (uv) 1/2

Hence ½ (u + v ) = (uv)1/2 or (u + v )2 = 4 uv ; or ( u ± v )2 = 0 ; or u = v

3. We want largest 3 digit number ; lcm of 4, 5, 6 and 7 = 420

420 N + 2 = 840 + 2 = 842

Alternatively from the options

4. 7.25 x 200 = 1450 ; 5.75 x 400 = 2300 ; total CP 3750

hence SP = 3750 + 20 % = 4500 ; 1/3 ( 600 ) = 200 @ 6.00 = 1200

thus rest 400 kg at 3300 or rate = 3300/400 = 8.25

5. Let speed of river = x ; time taken = 2.4/(5 ± x ) + 2.4/( 5 + x ) = 1

Hence x = 1 km/hr [ better from the options ]

6. CP = 10 ( considering 10 % profit) ; using allegation

3 : 2 = 10 ± (x ± 2 ) : x ± 10 ; x = 10.8

7. x1/a = y1/b = z1/c = k ; hence x = ka ; y = kb ; z = kc ; thus xyz = 1 = ka+b+c

Therefore a + b + c = 0
