Physical Fitness Vocabulary

Grade 7

1. Physical Fitness – the ability of the body to do the most activity with the
least amount of effort.

2. Skill Fitness – the kind of fitness that helps a person perform physical
skills.

3. Health Fitness – fitness that reduces a person’s chances of getting


disease.

4. Speed – move the body quickly from one place to another.

5. Coordination – ability of the body parts to work together; the ability of


the senses and body parts to work together.

6. Power – the ability to combine strength with speed.

7. Agility – ability to change positions quickly while controlling body motion.

8. Reaction Time – time it takes a person to move after seeing or hearing


a signal.

9. Balance – keep the body in a steady position while standing, sitting or


moving.

10. Flexibility – the ability to move the body through its full range of motion.

11. Muscular Strength – skeletal muscles exert or resist a force.

12. Muscular Endurance – apply force over a period of time.

13. Cardiovascular Fitness – the ability of the heart, lungs and circulatory
system to supply the nutrients necessary for prolonged work or activity.

14. Body Composition - % of body weight that is fat.


15. Aerobic – making the body able to take in more oxygen and use it better.
(Examples: swimming, cross-country skiing, jogging, bicycling, brisk
walking and skipping rope.)

16. Anaerobic – activities that can be done that don’t require prolonged
work.

17. F.I.T. – Frequency = how often you do something


Intensity = how hard you do something
Time = how long you do something

18. Resting Heart Rate – the rate in which your heart beats when you are
at rest. It is taken after being at rest for at least 10 minutes or more.

19. Maximum Heart Rate – (220 – age = ###) the most amount of beats
your heart can beat in a minute.

20. Target Heart Rate – the rate at which your heart should beat when
exercising. You must stay in this zone for at least 20 minutes at least 3
times a week. (MHR x .70 = ### - MHR x .85 = ###)

21. Lifetime Activity – an activity that can be done at any age. (Golf)

22. Benefits of Exercise

- Strengthens heart and lungs


- Increases flexibility
- Curbs appetite
- Relieves stress and anxiety
- Helps you sleep better
- Keeps you mentally alert
- Improves your appearance
- Creates a sense of wellness
- Protects against illness
