Reading and listening online

Tips from teachers

I use the same kind of activities that I use for face-to-face classes such as pre-teach
vocabulary. Instead of matching I ask learners to annotate.

I play games such as space man to pre teach, which is similar to hangman.

Since learners do not have access to worksheets I ask them to note down the answers
while listening to the text. I display the text (if it is a gap fill). I also make sure I that the
worksheet does not have too many gaps.

Supporting learners by giving them strategies to develop sub-skills remain the same,
although monitoring their effective implementation of the strategies is not easy to
ascertain because we can't monitor their work closely online, so I think we need to rely on
learners being open to share what they found challenging so that we can support them for
that particular sub-skill further.

Jigsaw reading and listening tasks work well, using the breakout room feature. In some
ways this is made easier by the online context as students are not in the same room so
can't hear what the other groups are saying/listening to. It can be complicated sharing
different types of media with learners in breakout rooms, but it is achievable through the
various screen-sharing options, screenshots and taking photos with mobile phones.

I like using extracts for online newspapers and magazines, and using short YouTube
videos related to the topic.
