Understanding Ability and Disability

Ability and disability exist on a spectrum of diversity. Ability refers to competence or proficiency in an area, while disability describes any condition that prevents or limits typical development, tasks, or participation. Different models conceptualize disability, including the charity, medical, economic, social, and human rights models which view disability through lenses of compassion, pathology, costs, societal barriers, and civil rights respectively.

• the quality or state of being able to do
something; competence in doing
something
• natural aptitude or acquired proficiency
DISABILITY
• any condition that prevents, delays or interferes with a
child’s normal achievement and development
• a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition
that impairs, interferes with or limits a person’s ability to
engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical
daily activities and interactions
