Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

1. Introduction

Paladin DesignBase software includes a number of advanced engineering applications used for
power system planning and operation. Paladin DesignBase, as well, offers a number of live
systems to continuously monitor and predict security, health, available capacity, and energy
management system (EMS) for the mission critical facilities. Power Analytics Corporation has
developed software whereby system data in the Siemens/PTI PSS/E format can be imported
directly into Paladin DesignBase software package.

This tutorial illustrates step-by-step how to import a data file from PSS/E into Paladin
DesignBase program. Also, V&V is performed for the imported system by showing the details of
the imported data as well as comparing the result of power flow and short circuit calculations to
the PSS/E.

2. Sample System Data

The single line diagram of the system to be imported to Paladin DesignBase is shown in the

3. Importing PSS/E data into Paladin DesignBase

To import a system data prepared in the PSS/E format into Paladin DesignBase, start the
DesignBase program and select “File-> Import PSS/E RAWD File” as shown below:

Figure 1: Accessing PSS/E Import Function from Paladin DesignBase

3
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

Next use the browse button to locate the file to be imported into Paladin DesignBase, see
Figure 2:

Figure 2: File Browser to Locate the PSS/E Data File for Importing into Paladin DesignBase

The sample file used to illustrate the importing feature of the DesignBase software package is
named “9bus.raw” and is located in the projects folder as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3: Selecting PSS/E Import Data File

4
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

After the PSS/E data file is identified, we need to specify a folder (e.g. “C:\DesignBase\projects”)
where the imported file should be saved. The name of the Paladin DesignBase Database file
(.MDB) should also be specified here (“9bus-imported.mdb”).

Figure 4: Specifying Imported File Name in the Paladin DesignBase Format

To start the import function, press the button marked as “Load PTI Data and Save to Jobfile” as
shown below:

Figure 5: Starting the PSS/E Import Function

5
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

If the import function is successful, the user has a chance to inspect the imported data in a
tabular format. Otherwise error messages will appear at the bottom of the screen identifying the
cause of error. As shown below, for example, we examine the bus data of the imported file.

Figure 6: Examining the Imported Data Prior to Saving to Paladin DesignBase format

Figure 7: Examining the Imported Bus Data

To save the imported data into Paladin DesignBase database press the “Close” button as
shown in Figure 6.

into Paladin DesignBase Program

4. Creating a Job File from the Imported PSS/E Data File

In the previous section we described how to import data in the PSS/E format into Paladin
DesignBase database. Now to create a job file from the imported data, select the “Text Editor”
icon as shown below:

Figure 8: Selecting Text Editor

The user is now prompted to select a data base, here the database (MDB) file imported in the
previous section, i.e., “9bus-imported.mdb” will be specified as shown below:

Figure 9: Opening a Database with Paladin DesignBase “Text Editor”

7
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

Next the text editor dialog will appear as shown below. Since there is no single line diagram for
the imported system, we can use Paladin DesignBase’s auto-one-line function to automatically
generate the single line diagram.

Figure 10: Paladin DesignBase “Text Editor” Main Screen

As shown below, we have selected “Neighborhood Only” with “Number of Levels to Include = 2”.
Then, pressing “Generate One Line Drawings” button, the program will initiate the process of
auto one line.

Figure 11: Accessing PSS/E Import Function from Paladin DesignBase

8
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

First, the program prompts the user if the Job File can be over-written, press “Yes” (since there
was no previous job file) to continue:

Figure 12: Confirming a Job file Overwrite from Text Editor

The symbols used for the one-line diagram can be either based on ANSI or IEC standard as
shown below, here ANSI is selected,

Figure 13: Selecting ANSI or IEC Symbols for Auto One Line

9
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

The paper size, orientation, etc., can be specified as shown in Figure 14.

Figure 14: Selecting Paper Size, Orientation, etc. in Auto One Line

Finally, confirm overwrite of the modified database (with single line diagram information added)
as shown below:

Figure 15: Confirming Overwrite for the Modified Database (single line diagram) in Auto One
Line

10
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

The user will be notified once the process of Auto One Line is completed.

11
Import the Siemens/PTI PSS/E Project
into Paladin DesignBase Program

The generated one line diagram is in the Figure 16 shown below:

5. Validation & Verification of the Imported System Data from PSS/E

format
In this section, we will show input data report from the report’s Manager of the Paladin
DesignBase‘s Advanced Power Flow program as compared to the system data presented in
Table 1 through Table 5. For example, table of branch data from Paladin DesignBase is shown
below (transformers and lines). The results shown in Table 6 match the system data
summarized in Table 4 and Table 5.
