1. Make learning notes of each Learning Activity in this module with a critical and creative
thinking approach.

In this module, we have learnt english for academic context. There were some text consist of
analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, explanation text, and the last activity is discussion text
In learning activity 1, we learnt about analytical exposition. The definition of analytical exposition
is a text that elaborate the writer’s idea about the phenomenon surrounding. Analytical expositions
are popular among science, academic community and educated people. The generic structure of An
Analytical Exposition consists of three components : thesis, argument, Reiteration. An Analytical
Exposition is intended by the writer/speaker: to convince the audience that his/her idea is an
important matter. Analytical Exposition has its characteristics, especially in terms of grammar,
vocabulary, and expressions.
In learning activity 2, we have learnt hortatory exposition. Hortatory exposition is a text which
represents the attempt of the writer to have the addressee do something or act in certain way.
Generic Structure of hortatory Exposition consists of three main components: thesis, arguments,
recommendation. The social function a hortatory exposition is intended by the writer/speaker: To
persuade the audience that something should or should not be the case or be done. Hortatory text has
its characteristic, especiallyin terms of grammar, vocabulary, and expression.
In learning activity 3, we learnt about explanation text. I observed a number of explanation texts. I
explored the purpose, type, structure, and language feature of explanation text. In this activity, I
know better about social function of the text, structure of the text, and lexico-grammatical feature of
text. The definition of the eexplanation text is a text which tells processes relating to forming of
natural, social, scientific and cultural phenomena. Explanation text is to say 'why' and 'how' of the
forming of the phenomena. It is often found in science, geography and history text books. The
generic structure consist of generic statement, sequenced explanation, concluding statements.
In learning activity 4, we have learnt about the characteristics of discussion texts. The purpose of a
discussion text presents differing opinions, viewpoints or perspectives on an issue, enabling the
reader to explore different ideas before making an informed decision. The writer normally explores
different opinions and ends with a personal opinion or comment. There are different stages in a
discussion are the first is an introductory statement of position supplying necessary background
information, second is an arguments for and against and supporting evidence, and the third is a
recommendation or conclusion.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1

RESUME OF ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION

A. DEFINITION
The definition of analytical exposition is a text that elaborate the writer’s idea about the
phenomenon surrounding. Analytical expositions are popular among science, academic
community and educated people.

B. SOCIAL FUNCTION
An Analytical Exposition is intended by the writer/speaker is To convince the audience that
his/her idea is an important matter

C. GENERIC STRUCTURE

An Analytical Exposition consists of three components:


1. Thesis: Introducing the topic and indicating the writer’s point of view.
2. Argument: Explaining the argument to support the writer’s position. The number of
arguments may vary, but each argument must be supported by evidence and explanation.
3. Reiteration: Restating the writer’s point of view / to strengthen the thesis. We can make
conclusion in reiteration.

D. LANGUAGE FEATURES
Analytical Exposition has its characteristics, especially in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and
expressions.

Grammatical points that are most often used:
 Use of internal conjunction
 Use of causal conjunction
 Use of the Simple Present Tense
 Use of relational process
 Use of compound and complex sentences
 Use of words that link argument
 Vocabulary

RESUME OF HORTATORY EXPOSITION

A. DEFINITION
Hortatory exposition is a text which represents the attempt of the writer to have the addressee
do something or act in certain way.

B. SOCIAL FUNCTION
The social function a hortatory exposition is intended by the writer/speaker: to persuade the
audience that something should or should not be the case or be done.

C. GENERIC STRUCTURE

A Hortatory Exposition consists of three main components:


1. Thesis: Statement or announcement of concerned issue.
2. Arguments: Reasons for concern that will lead to recommendation.
3. Recommendation: Statement of what should or should not happen or be done
based on the given arguments.

D. LANGUAGE FEATURES
 Focusing on the writer
 Using abstract noun; policy, advantage, etc
 Using action verb
 Using thinking verb
 Using modal adverb; certainly, surely, etc
 Using temporal connective; firstly, secondly, etc
 Using evaluative words; important, valuable, trustworthy, etc
 Using passive voice
 Using simple present tense

RESUME OF EXPLANATION TEXT

A. DEFINITION
Explanation text is a text which tells processes relating to forming of natural, social, scientific
and cultural phenomena. Explanation text is to say ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the forming of the
phenomena. It is often found in science, geography and history text books.

B. SOCIAL FUNCTION
An Explanation Text is intended by the writer/speaker: to explain the audience how and why
something works or happens.

C. GENERIC STRUCTURE
An Explanation text comprises three main parts:
1. General statement; stating the phenomenon issues which are to be explained.
2. Sequenced explanation; stating a series of steps which explain the phenomena.
3. Concluding statement.

D. LANGUAGE FEATURES
In an explanation text, there are linguistic features as below :
 Using simple present tense
 Using abstract noun (no visible noun)
 Using Passive voice
 Using Action verbs
 Containing explanation of the process

RESUME OF DISCUSSION TEXT

A. DEFINITION
A discussion text presents differing opinions, viewpoints or perspectives on an issue, enabling
the reader to explore different ideas before making an informed decision. The writer normally
explores different opinions and ends with a personal opinion or comment.

B. SOCIAL FUNCTION
 To present two points of view about issue or problem
 To present arguments from differing points of view about issue or problem

C. GENERIC STRUCTURE
A discussiom text consist of three main components :
 An opening : introduces the topic being discussed
 Arguments : one or more, with supporting evidence or elaboration/details
 A conclusion : sums up the discussion and gives a recommendation or opinion

D. LANGUAGE FEATURES
 Introducing category or generic participant
 Using thinking verb; feel, hope, believe, etc
 Using contrastive conjunction; however, on the other hand, but, in other side, although, etc
 Using modalities; must, should, could, may, etc
 Using adverbial of manner; deliberately, hopefully, etc
 Simple present
